My dark brahma rooster, Sassafras, has become a truly hen-pecked husband. A while ago his comb was minorly injured, probably from tuffling with Solomon, the junior rooster. Naturally the other chickens mercilessly pecked the injury, so that, by the time we let them out, he was bleeding...
Something is wrong with our hen. I think it is sour crop, but in other posts on sour crop I have never seen anyone mention a bald crop as one of the symptoms.
Symptoms:
-very thin, most noticeably in the feet
-inactive
-wings droopy
-crop feels mushy, seems swollen. I can lift the feathers...
Golden comets are good layers. I know a few people who have had big problems with aggression (toward other chickens), but we don't have this problem--probably because they freerange, and everyone has plenty of space. I would also recommend marans. Ours are good producers of dark brown eggs, and...
We have one brahma cockerel who is almost 14 weeks old. He has been living alone for around two months since his flock was wiped out by a bear. We've got 13 almost-4-week-old chicks as replacements. They're hopping out of their brooder box and making a mess in the garage, so we're ready to move...
Yeah, we need to install an electric fence. Like you, we live right up against a big forest, so numerous predators are a given. We want to free range as well (and have been since we got that first flock), but our neighbors are shaking their heads at the idea. They've lived here for years, so...
When we moved we inherited an existing coop. Part of one wall was made of chicken wire...not much against a bear. As you can (hopefully) see, it tried two or three areas and then tore it open at the seam. It must have had a long arm, because it was too big to fit inside the coop, so it reached...
Rural Virginia. You can try to prevent a bear attack by putting electric fencing around the run and not leaving food in the coop (so we learned after the rampage).
I am not sure if this is the right category, but here goes. We had a bear tear into our coop and kill 18 chickens. We shoveled out the bloody wood chips, but the dirt floor is stained in several areas with blood. Also, there is one patch where some thick white mold has grown. We have new chicks...
My dark brahma Sassafras is the sole survivor of a bear attack. He/she is a little over 8 weeks old. Judging by what people have said about feather coloring, I'm thinking Sass is a he. Is it normal for dark brahmas to have brown in their wings? Can anyone tell me if I have a cockerel or a pullet?
Thank you all for the welcome!
We are told we need a permit to kill the bear. The Game Commission told us our mistake was leaving food in the coop; the bear was attracted by the sweet smell. I guess it went for the chickens because there was no more feed left. They also said that we need to...
Hello!
We're new to chickens and new to this site.
A week ago we had 19 healthy, pretty seven-week-old chicks, but a bear got into the coop and killed 18. Somehow the brahma survived. We have 16 chicks on order now. Any advice as to how we might strengthen our coop to protect against future...
