Thanks, everybody. It looks as though she's stopped pecking at them for whatever reason. The next time I may try placing a fake egg in there as was suggested. (Also, I collect my eggs everyday -- it's very rare that I skip a day especially since this started!)
Thanks!
Okay,
This is driving me crazy. From what I can tell, one of my three hens is eating her eggs. They're always had crushed oyster shell available to them, so I can't figure it out. I also can't tell which hen it is, LOL. Clearly it's not the Ameracauna because I collect hers everyday & the color...

x2 - Bought some seeds years ago, never buy them again unless I'm looking to try a new variety. Same goes for chickens - Never need to buy more unless I buy a new breed to work on or need to improve my lines.
Because I write about them I'm always trying new varieties each year -...

Actually, I may or may not consider raising them as I may have someone willing to have them on their land. But that's neither here nor there. I do understand what you're saying - maybe more than you realize. I bred rabbits for many years (to improve a breed) and I wrote The Complete...
Thank you so much for the information! Yes, I'm certain that mine came from a hatchery...I bought them from a local feed store and he probably gets them from Murry McMurray. I'm sincerely interested in the black English Orpingtons.
Illia,
If I were to go after some of these birds that are common at the hatcheries but didn't actually purchase the from a hatchery...how do I know they're the real McCoy? (This is so interesting as I do the heritage or heirloom vegetables and the heritage chicken thing is new to me).
Hi All,
I'm live in suburbia and have 3 hens (Americauna, Rhode Island Red, Black Sex Link). I'm think of adding a couple of new girls to the flock in the spring and would like to consider one of the rare breeds or a breed that needs conserving. We are interested in good egg producers and kind...
When we lived on a farm years ago - the raccoons were very capable of doing this. They would kill everything in sight and and would actually take or eat only a couple of chickens.

Good to know! What's the difference between EEs and pure Ameraucanas?
I'll probably jump the gun and end up with one more hen anyway, 'cuz I can be like that.

Thanks Mary for your input. I'm very close to you in proximity - San Ramon, CA. I'm definitely going to wait until the spring before I decide if i need one more hen or not. Good to hear that I still have a chance for the colored eggs. When we lived on our farm many years ago, we loved...

Hmmm...well I hope the leg color doesn't mean anything because she has like medium brownish/gray legs. I think I'll have to wait until spring to know for sure because Alamo Hay and Grain could have ordered Easter Eggers instead of just Americaunas. Someone stated above that some Easter...
Well, if spring comes and she isn't laying blue or green eggs, then I guess I'll be adding one to the flock. I really miss our blues and greens from years past. Thanks for the advice!
Okay - so you know if they are laying if they're squatting? (Like when you go to pet them?) Good to know! I wonder why they call them easter eggers if they lay brown eggs?
Anyway, I'll check in the morning and see if she squats - looks like she very well may be holding out!
Thanks!
Chris
I haven't had chickens for about 12 years and now have three hens (Yeah!). We live in suburbia in the San Francisco Bay Area. I got my hens as chicks at the end of April and at the beginning of September, they began laying. At least the sex-link and Rhodie are laying - but I don't think the...
