    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

Pics would be super! Your idea sounds amazing. Are the Wyandottes pretty cold hardy? Mellow with other chickens? I would be very interested in a rooster youngster if you have one. I'll do some research. I am considering Orpingtons and don't know what else yet.

    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

How about hot water bottles to keep chicks warm? I watched a you tube yesterday of a woman who lives off-grid, raising brand new chicks. She had two, what looked like 1/2 gallon or quart canning jars that she filled with almost boiling water and then covered them with a sock or material ...

Solar Heater out of soda cans! I do hope you are willing to share this knowledge!! I, unfortunately, had to sell my Icelandics. The property I was moving to that had the chicken coop ... well, let's just say that it didn't pan out. I jumped the gun and had ordered the Icelandics, and then...

    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

Hey, ShabbyChix here. It hasn't even been a year between posts. I'm getting better at this! Ha. Seriously, I am starting over AGAIN. I just believe that the problems, issues and successes that we have, here in the Interior, are beyond what others can comprehend - regarding successfully...

    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

You are the last post on my thread. Thank you! It has been about a year since my last post. Yes, my last two chickens died, I think from eating insulation but am not sure. But I never could get the "need for chickens" out of my mind. I seem to really have a THING for chickens. Sooo... I...

    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

Well, it's been about a year since my last post. I lived off-grid at that time and did learn much regarding chickens and low temps/confinement. Living in the Interior, it was not unusual for temps to reach -30 degrees to -60 degrees. It was a challenge for sure. I did get majorly...

    North to Alaska!

Thank you so much for that info/opinion. We, of course, can't put water outside here .. or there would only be ice. I guess good ventilation may be the answer. But personality wise, do you think the geese would go after the chickens if they are confined. No option to confinement. I get...

    North to Alaska!

Does anyone have experience with mixing a couple chickens with a couple ducks and a couple geese in the same coop, confined for most of the winter? I have a friend who has the ducks and geese and would like to add a couple of my chickens. Any opinions or experience would be most helpful!

Anyone try having chickens, like, attached to their house? I mean, sharing heat?

I was rambling, sorry. They were all Buckeyes.

    North to Alaska!

Summer got really busy for me so I've been absent from BYC for awhile. I'm going be a Gramma! And not to a chicken. Very excited about that. Thinking of selling my cabin and moving back to (closer to) Fairbanks. But I have to say that, in large part because of this Forum, I have two...

Oh my gosh, I'm so excited! She will be so happy to have a friend for her pet! I'm not sure how to proceed. Can you give me your number so she can call you? Or email? I'm new here. Is there a secure way of doing this so I don't have to post my/her phone or email? She would never "et him"...

    North to Alaska!

I had no frost bite. Buckeyes have pea combs (almost not there) and no wattles that I can see! That and the fact that their feathers are tight, making them good cold weather chickens, are the reasons I have Buckeyes. Who knew that they would decide that feathers taste better than their food...

    North to Alaska!

Boy, I hear you regarding the busyness and not having things done. I had the exact same determination about wood, getting it all in before this winter, and I have none. House needs to be stained .. gave up on that and the coop needs some work. My coop is actually great except for the door...

Ah the country life.......... (AKA-- The country thread!!!!)

Sorry so long to reply but, yes, I did take the pics and have many more. Can't help it as the sky is magnificent and changing all the time. Happy that you enjoyed them! Thanks!! I used to live in the woods, which I loved, but having a view is amazing! I'm on a small hill surrounded by...

    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

This looks like a great system to me, and others may find that it will help them with their water freezing issues, but, I am off-grid. No way could I keep water circulating 24/7. Thanks for the info! I would like to hear from people who have solved the condensation build-up in their coops...

    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

I've heard others (who have electricity) say that they use a heated dog bowl or some kind of heat pad under their waterer. Being off the grid, I built a well insulated coop with essentially 8" of insulation in walls, floor and ceiling. Even so I ran the generator quite often, especially at...

    INTERIOR ALASKA CHICKENS

I'm still a "New Egg" and I love BYC! It has already helped me in so many different ways - I am a relatively "new" chicken person (1 yr) with chicken questions that require opinions from chicken owners who live in -60 conditions at times. This is a dramatically different scenario from an...

    North to Alaska!

I have heard that there have been cases of Bedbugs in Anchorage during the past couple years. Unknown in AK before that. I don't know what category they are in and if they affect animals or not. All those almost microscopic critters. Hope I never SEE (or feel) one. This is a very slow...
