    Coyote attack

The turkey was continuing to get better for some time, but I'm beginning to be convinced that his neck may be broken, badly sprained or possibly dislocated. I'm not willing to wrench his neck to try and pop it back in place (especially not knowing that that's the problem). He can sort of eat...

    Coyote attack

He's in a box in the garage and it's pretty tight and I don't think many flies will get in there thankfully. His wounds are pretty high up on his neck and with him as stiff as he is I don't think him picking will be a problem either, but good to know for future issues. I gave him his 3rd shot...

    Coyote attack

I've been giving him 1/2cc of Pen G Pro every morning, and stopped with the baby aspirin. I've been observing the swelling around the neck wound and it seems to be doing okay. Should I continue with a light coat of neosporin topically or withhold that because the Penicillin is good enough? He...

    Coyote attack

I gave him a baby aspirin yesterday and waited till this morning to start the Penn G procaine so that he wouldn't get dehydrated overnight. I read somewhere that the Penn G Procaine specifically was long acting and stayed in the system for 48 hours instead of 24, is it still okay to dose him...

    Coyote attack

Here is a video of him eating some grain, he finally started trying again today. Notice how he tries and tries but doesn't eat anything and then he finally gets some some of the time if he gets the neck angle right so it doesn't hurt as much. There are also some pics showing the neck swelling...

The swelling I spoke of was around the largest patch of missing skin. It felt firm and not pus filled, but I'm not sure if it's a good or bad sign for healing. Other than that they have scabbed over and look like they are doing well.

    Coyote attack

His neck is still too sore for him to eat or drink on his own. This has made it hard to feed and water him constantly and consistently but we are doing our best. We're still giving water and electrolyte/probiotic by syringe but he's showing less interest in it. We have to hold the food dish...

    Coyote attack

Yesterday we let him eat some of his regular grain ration from a bowl held near his face. His crooked neck made it hard but eventually he got the hang of it and gobbled down quite a bit. Hopefully it wasn't too soon to start on that. He's also been eating a little bit of yogurt mash and some...

Thanks again for all your help, it's very much appreciated. I'll continue to post significant progress as he makes it.

    Coyote attack

I took a closer look at the healthy turkey we have (2 of 2) and noticed how his windpipe follows the sweeping S curve of his neck right down the front. The injured turkey's neck is significantly more crooked, and his windpipe winds around to the back until down past his feathers before working...

    Coyote attack

Quote: The coyote I chased off (hoping there is only one) didn't look very big. We have a raccoon live trap that might work if he isn't too smart for it. I also need to get the electric fence fired up again. The fence hit several big dogs (including a great dane) that came to visit and...

    Coyote attack

I might try making a little shelf in the box closer to his neck height to promote self feeding. I was planning to mix up some plain yogurt with his ground up grain ration that he was on (broiler grower) along with some mashed boiled egg yolks. I'm hoping this will go down easy and be easy to...

    Coyote attack

He made it through the night but didn't look good this morning. The girlfriend has been feeding him a liquid nutrient diet while I'm at work by syringe. He's started even gobbling at the syringe tip showing interest in it. I'm still concerned about his stiff neck and about that inhibiting self...

    Coyote attack

Quote: Good to know, I trust your advice thanks. Quote: I'm afraid this or something else must be wrong since the wound isn't really that big and appears to be mending already. Quote: He's in a cozy box in my garage, the day was warm here in Portland and the nights have been mild so the...

    Coyote attack

Sorry I missed your last two posts before posting. I'm not sure how to get him to eat anything, I did dropper a few droppers of water into his mouth but have no way of getting any nutrients in him (I don't have anything besides his grain feed). He's only 5mo old and so he's around 10-12lb...

She brought me some Penicillin G Procaine and the bottle says to give 1 mL per 10lb body weight. That's 1/10th of the 1 cc dose recommended above. Which is more accurate?

    Coyote attack

Quote: So since he's still not eating or drinking or barely moving I shouldn't give him any injected penicillin until/unless he starts eating and drinking on his own? My girlfriend found a farm store that was open and was able to buy some penicillin just before they closed and will be back...

    Coyote attack

Thank you very much for your suggestions so far, I really appreciate them. The biggest main wound seemed to be gelling over, but some of the skin was turning bright pink and some was turning more white, more like cooked chicken vs healthy pink skin. I wasn't able to get any injectable...

    Coyote attack

I had to go to work for about 6 hours and nobody was here to watch him. He's still alive and still standing with his head down, the wound looks different but I'm not sure if it's any better or if it's worse. He doesn't look like he's moved much and I doubt he's had any water. It's been just...

    Coyote attack

This morning around 4:30am I heard some thumping. I listened for a sec and thought maybe one of the turkeys fell off the roost or something. I didn't hear any alarm noises and thought it might be fine, but then heard some chirping and flapping. So I ran outside and found a coyote on top of...
