Hi everyone,
My hen (almost 5yo Australorp chicken) has not been eating and not behaving as a healthy hen. I took her to the bird vert where she stayed under observation for the past 3 days. They ran lots of tests but cannot identify why she is suddenly lethargic and off her food. I paid $800...
Hi,
I think my hen has the same thing. I found her almost motionless yesterday morning. She was standing with her tail drooping down and as she was not her usual self I took her to the vet. He examined her and said it was probably one of two things: a reproductive obstruction or a tumor. Both...
Thanks for your reply. She seems to have backed off a bit but if it starts again I may have to consider your suggestion. There has been no blood that I have seen anyway. She's gone broody again (second time in 2 months) so her behaviour is very strange again - one minute she acts like a rooster...
Thanks very much for this - it makes sense what you say - in fact it did cross my mind at the time that she may have been trying to do just that! Ginger didn't appear to be upset at the time so I gathered she wasn't too distraught over the whole saga. Really appreciate your comments - Thanks :)
Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me!
I have 3 egg laying hens, two Australorps and one Rhode Island Red (named Ginger) - they are all free range and approx 1 year old (and no roosters). Soon after I got them, one of the Australorps, Olive, asserted herself as the alpha chook - and I understand...
Update: Yes, she's gone broody! Still fluffy puffy and now sitting on eggs all day. I felt under her tum and she has removed feathers. All I need now is a rooster! Thanks for your help.
Thanks for your comments. I'm still at work so haven't had a chance to check her feathers yet. I usually go into the coop in the evening to check everyone's 'tucked in' for the night, and she's never behaved like that to me before (she's approx 10 months old). I do like the expression 'fluffy...
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone could help explain why one of my hens may be doing this ...
I have 3 hens, two Australorps and one Rhode Island red. Yesterday evening my largest hen, one of the Australorps, went into the coop alone about an hour before sundown and sat up on the high perch. When...
Hi! I'm here because I got a fright this morning when i found 4 eggs from 3 hens! I can only assume that one of my girls layed twice! I have 2 australorpes and one Rhode Island red. The red usally lays larger eggs than the australorpes, so I usually get one large and two small eggs each day...
Hi, Just a note to introduce myself ... my name is Karen and I am new to chicken keeping - I have 3 beautiful girls 2 black australorp hybrids and one rhode island red that I have had for approximately 3 months now: Olive, Ivy and Ginger. They all live in my suburban backyard in Melbourne and...
