Anyone ride a bicycle for exercise?

.You'll really enjoy riding! It will take 2-3 weeks of biking to start building up some endurance. The nice thing about riding a bike is you can get any type of workout your interested in, and it is easy on your joints. As another poster mentioned, it is addicting! I'm an avid mountain biker...

How many hens should I use for my coop???

Slingha, I completely agree with giving all of my animals the best life I possibly can, but my chickens have 2 coops to choose from and they all prefer to be in one coop together....their choice not mine..

How many hens should I use for my coop???

I agree 100% with this statement from Beekissed, ".but I do insure my food animals have a good life as I can give them before they die." But, I have a 7x4' coop, with the access door always open so the hens can come and go as they please in a 40x60' fenced area.. I have another coop 8' long...

YOUR EXPERIANCES! YOUR OUTCOMES! YOUR PREDATORS & PESTS!

Oh, we have plenty of predators that come through our yard, all the homes are on acreages with a lot of room for wildlife, in fact while building a new garden area today, there were 4 deer bedded about a 100 yards away. What keeps the predators at bay are a 5' no climb fence, a bird dog, and our...

YOUR EXPERIANCES! YOUR OUTCOMES! YOUR PREDATORS & PESTS!

Our place is just outside Prescott a little ways, we have about every predator common to the U.S., and in 3 years of raising chickens we haven't lost any to predators yet. In fact every year my Wife and I rationalize buying "extra chicks" because we're sure we will lose a few to predators, but...

    Rhode Island Reds!

I added 1 RIR and 2 leghorns to our flock last year, along with a few other breeds. They are egg laying machines! By far better than our BA's, EEs, BR, and even our Gold Sex Link. I'll be adding 3 more RIRs and 3 Leghorns this year. They also started laying earlier than any of our other...

Keeping the inside of my coop dry/clean in winter

Coop-er, I would get the straw out and go with pine shavings, 10 cu.ft. packages should be available at any feed or farm store, and it will cover a large area. I started out with pine shavings and switched to straw for a short while before going back to shavings. I found the straw kept the...

    Nipple watering

I have all 11 of my hens drinking from the water nipples, 2 1/2 '' pvc pipe horiz. with 4 nipples and hooked up to a 50 gallon drum. Other then the occasional cleaning, I only fill the barrel about 3 times a year. Teaching the hens to use the nipples is fairly simple, pour water over the top of...

Mosherd, I have 11 hens in a 6'x4' raised coop. 2 roosting bars, 3 egg boxes, 1-12''x 5' sliding window and 3 hinged openings plus a ladder leading to the entry/exit door. The coop is about 4' tall and 3' above the ground. The hens have access to about 1600 sq.ft. of fenced yard to roam...

    Only 4 - 6 eggs a day from 14 hens. What's up?

Ya, I know, it took a LONG time..My Easter eggers that are the same age were laying almost an egg a day, they just started to moult now. All my new hens that are about 20 weeks old have really started coming on strong so they are taking up the slack.

    Only 4 - 6 eggs a day from 14 hens. What's up?

I'd bet they are moulting. I had the same thing happen recently, the older hens (2years) started moulting. I didn't notice much except a few extra feathers in the coop and run, a drastic drop in egg production, and a few feathers out of place on the hens. After almost 3 months of moulting the...
