We have a similar set-up. Run is totally enclosed 360 degrees in 1/2 inch hardware cloth, with 18 inch buried apron. The coop itself is about 3 feet above the ground, and the door is in the bottom of the structure, to provide a completely still pocket of air for them to roost in on cold...
So interesting how they can be so different . . . Our GSL is my favorite bird. Calm, sweet and level headed. Definitely the best hen of our little flock.
PS -- we got all our birds from a local farm/hatchery. (I liked driving there to pick them up instead of receiving them in the mail, though I know that usually works fine.) I found the hatchery on line and then checked out reviews of them. Could not have been more pleased. It was a nice...
