True when I got my Rhode Island Reds it was either them or something Velders. (Sorry ) When I got the Barred Rocks at Russells Feed Store, that's all they had. But I'm happy with what I got. Especially with the Reds, nice big eggs, some double yolkers. Barred Rocks haven't started laying yet, so...
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. I guess if they can get used to the hot weather here, they shouldn't have a problem with the cold weather we do get. They may get a little confused like we people do. It can be warm one week and cold the next, then back to warm again. You never know what...
The coop is an old shed that was given to us. It's not very airtight so there should be plenty of ventilation. Just hoping it's not so ventilated that it won't keep heat in. My chickens are so spoiled, they have plenty of places to roost, so they can have their pick. Is it ok to leave the food...
Hi, I haven't been through the winter with my chickens yet. We don't have electricity running to the coop, so no fan for the hot summer days and nights. Lately it's been in the mid 90's. The chickens don't seem to be doing too bad in there even though it gets pretty warm, it's not really hot...
I don't have any raccoon stories. I did have some dogs tear the fencing from the side of the coop where it was nailed on and kill 16 out of 23 chickens. How'd they know to get in there?
Welcome to the site. I'm a newbie myself and have gotten quite absorbed in some of the members stories. Who needs soap operas when you have chickens? We have our own Days of our Chickens.
Wow, that's cool. My dogs don't get along with my chickens quite that well. Although I don't think they would hurt them on purpose, they're baser instincts might kick in and they might be a little too rough with them.
Sorry to hear of your losses. I recently lost 16 out of 23 of my chickens when some dogs got in the pen, so I know what you're going through? We got our chickens from Tractor Supply and Russells Feed Store. I've heard this is a bad time to get chicks. They're usually more available in the spring.
Hi, I'm a new member from Middleburg, FL. I have some Rhode Island Red Chickens that are 25 weeks old, and Barred Rocks that are 17 weeks old. The Reds started laying at 17 weeks and some of them were starting to lay some pretty large eggs-some were double yolkers!, but 2 weeks ago some...
