    Oh, this makes sense!

Hen or Roo? Guess the breed.

They were already getting feathers when I bought them 4 weeks ago, Debra was the biggest/most feathered. I would guess 5 weeks but not certain.

Hen or Roo? Guess the breed.

La’trexa is a lavender Orpington. Comb slightly pink but no wattle. Debra was sold as an olive egger, but the store really wasn’t sure because they were mixed together in a bin marked ”rare or exotic breeds”. Her feet are already feathering out. Comb is getting pinker but no wattle. Idea of...

Ladies or gentlemen chicks, any guesses?

We bought them from CalRanch with some feathers already in, guessing they’re 4-5 weeks old. Bazelda, Sophia and Tad Cooper are Sapphire Gems, Debra was sold as a mystery breed olive egger and La’trexa is a Lavender Orpington.

OK experts, what do you think? 11-week-old silkie cross (I can't remember what they're crossed with. Cochin?) Pullets or roos?

21 Expensive Chickens Killed By 2 Dogs

Docheff, that is really sad :( We just had a terrible hatch, the mother hen killed 2 chicks that I couldn't get away from her fast enough, I rescued one right as she pecked it out of its shell, one hatched and 3 other eggs had fully-formed chicks inside that never pipped. Maybe they got too warm...

    Hatch emergency!!!

My hen killed 2 chicks yesterday and was off her eggs all day so I took the rest of the eggs inside and put them on a damp towel, in my crock pot with the lid on, and then put a lamp over it (I didn't turn the crockpot on). I had a digital thermometer inside to keep the temperature where it...

Rescued hatching chick from hen that ate the shell... now what?

The rescued chick has fluffed up and is moving around. Another hatched this morning and is doing well. Mom is still sitting on the golf balls I put in the nest when I took all her eggs away. 3 eggs still unhatched. Do I try to sneak a chick in under her tonight or tomorrow night and see if she...

Rescued hatching chick from hen that ate the shell... now what?

Chick was really sticky so I ran some warm water over her and she looks less like she got into the hair gel. Still breathing strong and peeping, but laying down.

Rescued hatching chick from hen that ate the shell... now what?

Oh my word! Checked the coop today to find two dead chicks. Watched throughout the day (it was hot so mama was off the eggs part of the day.) Actually saw one pip as I looked at them! I went up to the house and got my phone to take a picture, went right back. In that time, the hen came over and...

Broody buff orpington off nest in summer temperatures

Two eggs hatched yesterday! And then we had 2 dead chicks in the coop today. I hate to think that she killed them on purpose, but both had been pecked. There are 5 eggs left.

    Chickens off eggs!!

My chicken kept getting off her eggs for the first 4 days, she would get distracted and take a dust bath... wander around.... and then hours and hours later she'd go get back on her eggs. I thought they'd all die! But I closed the coop to keep her from going outside and being distracted and she...

    Silkie June/July Hatch-Along!

Nope, nothing. She wasn't fantastic about being on the nest all the time for the first 4 days, I'm hoping they're just behind.

Broody buff orpington off nest in summer temperatures

So today is 'day 21' from when we got the eggs, but I think they're almost a week behind the schedule (based on what we could see when we candled them) because of all of Lola's futzing around the first few days. Actually, at this point I'm almost praying they're a week behind because we're gone...

    Silkie June/July Hatch-Along!

Today is day 21, I have only peeked at the eggs but I don't see any cracks or pips, I don't see them move. Mama is still taking good care of them. Got anxious and carefully candled one. No internal pip, no blood line, inside looks pretty 'full' and can't really see anything. I'm wondering if...

    June to July hatch-a-long!!!

She is so beautiful! Good luck! We are on day 18 with our first broody and first hatch. She’s been a little flighty and not on her nest all the time since it’s been hot, everyone is anxious and nervous.

    Silkie June/July Hatch-Along!

3 of our silkie eggs are still going, the hen has gotten rid of 2 and I think she’s debating getting rid of 1 Americauna. 2 black maran and 1 other Americauna left in the nest, I think we’re on day 18! It’s been hot here and Lola isn’t on her nest all the time, but she still seems pretty...
