I think #3 is a roo also. The legs are very sturdy in comparison. 3 & 4 get more grubs when I dump compost in the pen, though they were all taught to be good foragers by their Mom before a hawk got her.
The Mom laid green eggs so perhaps you are right. The feed store I got her from sold me 2 roosters in a batch of supposedly 5 hens, so they may not know the breeds either. Thanks. BTW you have a pretty hen.
Comments noted. We specifically asked for all females. We now have one rooster to 6 hens and they are doing well. The rooster is a Barred Rock. You are right I was a novice and my flock has had to pay for my education. Glad you love your chickens they are well cared for by someone who is...
I have a white leghorn named Flossie and she is also a good, consistent layer. She is friendly but doesn't really like being picked up. She does stray and is so white I am afraid she is a target for hawks. We lost another WL to a predator. We keep them in a tractor most of the day but let them...
We had one pretty but mean rooster (named Mabel because they assured us she was a girl-NOT) We had to get rid of it. He pecked the hens and was aggressive when he mated. He drew blood and snatched them bald headed. My female is a good layer. She is very grabby for food and if another hen beats...
I have a BR rooster who is magnificent and LARGE. Just gorgeous when he shakes his ruff it is like a swirling skirt of Spanish dancer. He is protective of his hens and always on the look out for predators. He dances around the hens to round them up and knows when they are all in the coop at...
Buffy, my Araucana was killed by a hawk. She had been taking excellent care of 4 chicks that are now one month. She taught them to forage and was very protective of them. I have other 3 chickens and a rooster, a Barred Plymouth Rock (their Dad). One chicken is a year old, two are 10 months old...
We now call Begonia Biggie. He is a good roo, a Plymouth Rock. Looks after his hens protectively. Mable (Mabe) just got mean, harassing the younger chickens and attacked my husband a couple times. Mabe is no longer with us. Chloe (now Clovis) is still little. We got 3 sets of chickens about 6...
My RIR (Mabel) turned out to be a crowing rooster. He was great as a chick but now is mean and harasses the others. He attacked my husband's legs and chases the little ones and pecks them till they squawk. I intervene when I see or hear it. He is really pretty with beautiful green tail feathers...
That happened with my Barred Plymouth Rock. I wondered if they came out when he was mating. He doesn't have bare spots, just 2 piles of feathers different places I the yard.
