Happy Easter Everyone I know I am going to ramble a bit here, so please forgive me in advance. Life-long chicken owner. Grew up sitting on the back lawn plucking Sunday dinner. Always owned dual purpose birds, but just mutts. Rarely pluck a chicken…instead just slit the chest and pull the...

Killing, Plucking, Eviscerating, & Cutting Up Your Chicken - Graphic!

Skin 'em as opposed to plucking. If you are doing only a few birds, it is so much easier. Roasters probably do better with the skin on, but we cut up the birds as part of processing and we don't like the skin on them anyway. So, just skin them.

Things you've learned while building your coop...

Hey cchardwick............aren't you worried about your coop and/or dog blowing away in a strong wind?

Has anyone ever trained their horse to do tricks?

It has taken me many years, but I have finally taught my gelding to run like hell to the far corner of the 10 acre pasture the minute he sees a halter in my hand.

I just shot my first Coyote! 10pm

if the coys are coming in that freely and during the day, they are also coming in at night. You will not be there with (hopefully more gun) all the time. In my area we can keep foot traps open on private property. You may need to chain your dogs for a while, but foot traps do the job real...

Placement of coop around house--help please

Predators................we live in a small rural town of 1,000 souls. Most folks have a little acreage. I know of at least 20 guys (me included) that keep a live trap open year round..........coons, skunks, feral cats, etc. Sure works for us...........and either day or night............24/7

Our New Coop: Motel 6, Delivery Day AT LAST YEAH !!!

Nice coop. I'm not carpenter, but I am a good woodworker, and these guys did a nice job for you. A little suggestion: I cannot tell if you have a rain gutter on the low end of your coop roof. If you don't have one, then all of the rain/snow is going to go right off of your coop into your run...

    PVC pipe feeder

Pretty much decided on 4" diameter with a 60 degree elbow. The feeder will be outside in the well-covered run and up next to the coop.......for as much protection from the weather as possible. We have Barred Rocks, 14 hens and 1 Roo 1. How long should the sloping lateral be for this number...

Inside nests or outside nests - need Pro Advice

Everyone...........thanks a lot for all the good input. I am glad I had my concerns validated. So, I'm going with my plan for inside nests. Several of you were kind enough to caution me about the number of chickens per sq ft. I have 48 sq ft in the coop, but also have an attached 6 x 12...

Inside nests or outside nests - need Pro Advice

I am building a new coop. I am a B+ wookworker, so the project is going well. I have literaly "stolen" almost every idea I have from this wonderful website. And I have also read EVERY post I could find about having nests inside or out. I am using traditional framing with (so called) 2x4...

will free roaming chickens go home at night?

Thanks again for all the responses. As to breed of chicken, we thought we were decided until we found this website. Now we are back to trying to decide. We just want an EZ keeper breed, that will lay white eggs and be be a good layer as well as big enough to be a good meat bird. Everyone...

will free roaming chickens go home at night?

thanks for much, folks, for the info. what great people. I think I will encourage my husband to add a run to the coop........good idea. And we had never even considered having food out of the coop for them, wanting them to associate the coop with food. And, as for predators, we have racoons...

will free roaming chickens go home at night?

My husband is building a wonderful coop for about a 14-20birds. He also flys kites of roller pigeons. And raises horses. The new coop will have two sections, so that as the birds age, we can seperate out the older ones headed for our dinner table. Anyway, here is my question. We live on 20...
