The chick is now up and about with two siblings :) One of which hatched early this morning, and the other that hatched approx. five and a half hours ago, but he is now panting. I really hope he pulls through! So far he is the runt.
Okie dokie! What is the average time for drying out? What exactly am i looking for?
The first chick is out, and the humidity is at 47%. He has been out for approx. five minutes and is starting to look more silver than black, and i'm guessing this means that he is drying out.
EDIT: he has not...
Our humidity is at 45% right now, four eggs have pipped. Should we risk it to increase humidity, or is it OK?
One little guys only been at it for ten minutes and looks pretty close to being out
Okay, we are on daytwo of lockdown, and out humidity is at 50%. Don need to Rais it, and if so, how do I do that without opening the inqubator? We have a little giant, and one chicken is pipping.
Umm... If any of them start looking lethargic, provide them with some sugar water, and socialization is key! If you have unfriendly chicks, you'll have unfriendly hens :)
We are not completly new to the world of broody hens, as about two or three years ago we had a hen hatch us some eggs, but sadly enough, on week three of life they got got (lol). And about a year later, the poor little one legged chicken that was their mother got got as well (lol, got got...
I was wondering about letting the mama chicken out before the chicks hatch. If she wants to come out, should we let her? How long should she be out for?
Thanks!
We have our first broody hen of the season! We just found her yesterday, so we put a few fake eggs under her and left her be, to make sure she was actually broody. And sure enough, she is! We set her up this afternoon in our brooding section of the coop, and the due date is the 13th of next...
Thank you :) We set her up with the fourteen eggs and she seems to be covering them fine. Our weather is warming up pretty well, so i'm not too worried about that.
Thank you very much Ridgerunner!
Hello! We have a broody buff here, and my mom is convinced that she would do fine with fourteen to sixteen eggs, but i don't thin her butt is that big XD
So anyway, how many do you think would be suitable? She is average sized, not terribly fluffy.
Thank you so much!
Okay, i was thinking we could make some kind of sling for her leg, because when she walks it gets in her way quite a bit and makes it hard for her to balance, or maybe look up some of those chicken "walkers"... i don't know, we'll explore the options (:
Thank you!
Okay. If it is Mareks, should i make it so that she has no contact with the rest of the flock?
Should i be taking her out and letting her peck around, or would that just make things worse?
Well, it turns out that i was out of town when the first one, Speckle Butt, started getting sick, so i'm not sure how it started, but by the time i got back, one of his legs was paralyzed, but he was eating and drinking just fine, and he just slowly got worse and worse until he died : (
I don't...
One of our hens is walking wither her toes curled. When she is standing still i can mess with her foot and put the toes out the right way, but as soon as she takes a step, she just curls them right back up.
We just noticed it a few minutes ago, and we have a really busy day today, so i wont be...
