So just when I finally had all my chickens out of quarantine and big enough to be in together...my horse boarder, bless her heart, brought me 3 little guys she bought at a garage sale...on a Sunday evening, when I had no chick starter, and nothing set up :) But we got all set up, and now I have...
Well none of this is great news, because with only one being a pullet, to add to my existing 8 girls, I'd say only one roo can stay. 2 of them have particularly stolen my heart. Sigh.
This is my first time raising chicks, and I was wondering if it is possible to tell their sexes yet? (Any input on their breeds is totally welcomed too :)

I'm assuming #7 is a rooster, because I"m pretty sure I heard him crow today
It isn't moldy. It's the entire barley plant chopped, and stored at high moisture so that it ferments, not molds. We wouldn't feed our cattle moldy feed either :)
Our family has got out of cattle recently, and we have tons (literally) of barley silage left in our yard.
What are your thoughts on feeding barley silage to chicks, hens, and/or broilers? Could it be used as a primary feed? Or even as a supplement?
Eggcessive, I'm sorry for the late reply, but I wanted to thank you for your post. I quarantined this chick and fed it electrolytes, by the next morning it was cheeping and trying to jump out of its box to be with his friends. It did a complete turn around, and shocked us all.
I picked up a large group of broiler chicks on Tuesday, (born Monday), and one is incredibly limp and lethargic this afternon. It has a white moucousy discharge from its vent....not poopy like pasty butt. I have it quarantined, but I'm wondering what it might be? I think it might be too late...
Thanks for the info on the spray insulation! That is probably out of our budget for the coop, but would be an ideal solution otherwise!
Bear Foot Farm, that is exactly what my husband was thinking as a solution. I think we are leaning towards that. I am researching what thickness of...
Thanks for the reply AK Baha.
By foam insulation, what type of product do you mean? Is this something you can buy in a can, or something we would need to have someone come in and do?
Hi there, I'm a newbie on the forum, but have been doing a bit of browsing over the past few days.
My husband and I have recently moved, and inherited a chicken coop at our new home with 16 Isa Brown hens.
The coop is wood framed, with wood slats inside and out (so no exposed framing on the...
