    Coop size

Hi everyone I'm planning to convert a shed, 11'6"' x 5'8", into a coop with an outside run looping around the outside from one side to the other (sorry, no measurements for that one). From what I'm seeing here, it sounds like my planned coop would be big enough for the following (all hens): 1...

Just insulating the nesting box area?

I saw this and thought it might help if it was put under the nest box? I'm going to try it this winter on my dog's water dish. http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/11/make-cookie-tin-waterer-heater-under-10.html I also saw this that I thought would be good. Granted these are both regarding...

    Starting my coop: predator-proofing question

Hi all. I have a question regarding this as well. The area my coop will be in has all sorts of tree roots running under where the floor will be. I'm trying to sort out the best way to create the flooring. Some ideas in my head for spring construction are: 1) Lay hardware cloth down inside...

    Chicken Tractors?

I guess. I'm just looking for something that the chickens can use while I'm outside that won't be hard to move; I'm only 5'3" :-)

    Chicken Tractors?

Great feedback. Thanks! That is exactly my concerns (hawks). I'm just hoping that it would be something that they can use during the day when someone is home and/or when I'm doing yard work.

    Chicken Tractors?

I'm just looking for something lightweight that I can use when I'm home to get them to new lawn areas for new bugs/scratching/etc. They would have a secure coop and run for when I'm not around or overnight. The only concern I would have would be more of a wind issue. Do you think it would hold...

    Chicken Tractors?

Would something made of PVC piping, maybe with some sand for weight, suffice for a tractor?

So, I just got off the phone with the City Zoning Officer for Marlborough, MA and she was VERY helpful. She told me that my zone isn't the right zone but she wouldn't care if I got chickens as long as: 1) there weren't a ton of them 2) I got no complaints from neighbors 3) they had cute little...

I'm just going off a post that was done here in 2012. From that information, my understanding would be that you could have 10 pets, no matter the breed/species, but that was all the animals you could have. Either way, I'm only planning to have 3 hens.

The last thing I read here on this site was up to 10 "pets" so if you name them and they are "pets" its ok. I haven't called City Hall yet to confirm.

Hi! I'm in Marlborough, too, and am thinking about getting some hens for the spring. Do you have any informatino you could share on what ordinances there might be? Last I had was from 2012 but it sounds like your info might be more up to date?

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Well, that's the thing. There is nothing on my city website ordinances and I was wondering if anyone knew of any updated ones since 2012 when there was a posting on it here. I'm still easily 6 months out from it so I guess I have time to call City Hall and will have to do that unless someone...

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Hi! I'm in Marlborough and am trying to learn more about keeping chickens. I saw that in 2012 one poster said as long as they have cute names and are pets, they are allowed, but is there any additional info that anyone can give or advice on how to approach the neighbors?
