KAZROB: Very glad to hear that your keets are doing good. I wondered if they would scatter and fly away from their foster hen as they got older. They sound like they are adorable. My keets are doing great. They are 3 weeks old, but have no foster mother hen but me. I am raising them in a...

I have a friend in Loudoun county that is looking to give away 7 light brahma hens, ranging in age from 1.5 to 5 years old. He tells me that his flock is very healthy. My light brahma hens are terrific layers. I just do not have room in the coop for more chickens. Let me know if you are...

It appears to be the same here. The hens love (and devour!) the egg shells, and just play around with the oyster shelI. They may eating some of the oyster shell, because the shells on the eggs are more consistent and thicker. No more splotchy-looking eggs. I have always fed back their egg...

Very cool! If any of my hens goes broody, I would love to see her hatch and raise chicks. I do not plan to use an incubator to hatch eggs. I just purchased guinea chicks this week. They are very different than chickens! We plan to let them forage all day. But they will need to be penned...

CONGRATULATIONS on your first egg! Makes all the trouble worth while. I got my first egg in December. I took all kinds of pictures. I still treasure every egg. I currently get all brown eggs. This Spring I am expanding my flock to include hens that lay blue/green/olive eggs.

My first winter with the chickens, too. They did fine without any supplemental heat in the wood coop. Today I noticed a spot of frostbite on the comb of one BR hen. The rooster may have a spot on his comb as well. But everyone else looks great. Two hens laid eggs all winter. Now I am...

@KAZROB: how are your keets faring? Are they still staying with the hen? I have 8 keets, which are about a week old, in a brooder pen. The keets seem so vulnerable at this stage. Feeding them crumbled hard boiled eggs with chick feed right now. I offered them fermented chick feed...

. Hapless: I am still interested in getting your cream legbar and amerucana chicks/pullets. I thought about waiting until one if my birds goes broody and getting hatching eggs and let the hen hatch and raise the chicks. I want to add color to my egg basket and add new breeds. I live near you..

Looks like a good recipe! Similar ingredients that I use for pork BBQ. Never thought about using a crock pot, though. Think I will try your recipe this weekend.

post your chicken coop pictures here!

This will be a good first coop for 3 hens. We all keep tweaking our coops to improve them. If you don't build a different coop before winter, you can use tarps to provide additional protection. Also, moving the coop to a protected location makes a big difference. Enjoy your new flock!
