Dizziness and possible blindness in a 2 year old hen???

So I have a two year old barred rock hen that seems to have gone blind over the last three days. It started out that she seemed tired and was often closing her eyes for longer periods of time. No discharge, no redness, but then the second day she seemed dizzy. Her head was bobbling side to side...

    RIR hen with diarrhea??

So my hen "laid" a weird sac that was 8 inches long and unevenly shaped. Like a long unformed egg but long and only half full of liquid but no yolk. She is up and about now and seems to be a lot more healthy but I'm still nervous about moving her in with my other hens. Any ideas on why she would...

    Odd Rooster Behavior

The first photo is of the dominant rooster and the second photo is of my other. As of yesterday I separated them and gave them each some hens. My older hens are with the dominant rooster (they are older than both roosters and not very mild mannered lol) and gave the weaker rooster some hens his...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I have never had broody hens that were younger than a year old. My first broody hen was two years old and many followed after that. I did notice that younger ones (barely one year old) started going broody if there was an older hen broody.

    Odd Rooster Behavior

That's exactly what I was thinking! He has never shown dominance and they were from the same batch of chick's so the other rooster has always been the alpha. So if I were to get rid of the dominant one, would the other start to mature as a rooster and be more manly?

    Dogs Killing My Chickens!

Yea you must leave the chicken on the dog for three days for the smell of rot to affect the dog. It's amazing how well that plus the leash training worked. He literally herds them closer to the house when they start wondering too far and has warded off coyotes for them.

    Dogs Killing My Chickens!

When we first got into chickens we had the same problem with our german shepherd. And keep in mind he is very well trained. But natural instincts kick in sometimes over training. So we went with an old country dog tradition and took the dead bird/birds and tied them to the dogs collar, and tied...

    Odd Rooster Behavior

I have two white plymouth rock roosters and only one of them acts like a rooster! The second is definitely a rooster with his larger size and big tail but he has a short comb, doesn't crow, doesn't hump the hens, and isn't aggressive. He doesn't fight the other rooster, but does act like a...

    Broody Hen Thread!

I'm have a broody hen right now too and I am soo thankful she is one of my nicest hens so she is being sweet about me checking her eggs ect. She was initially sitting on her clutch in a coop with laying boxes closely connected and kept stealing eggs from others :) sweet mama would adopt them...

    RIR hen with diarrhea??

Ooo that makes sense but I hadn't thought that far, thank you for mentioning it. Because my flock is 100% free range and we just lock them into the coops at night for safety, I always go by the three day rule to prevent anything from spreading to the rest of the flock. So if she's still sick...

    RIR hen with diarrhea??

I have 19 hens and two roosters of various breeds. Sadly, yesterday I found one of my RIR hens hiding in my son's play house and she seemed abnormally calm. She usually does not like to be held or touched a lot so I was surprised when she let me pet her and pick her up. When I picked her up she...

    White Plymouth Rock white feet??

Thank you, yea my husband said it was probably bad breeding but my curiosity always gets me. :) we have 21 chicks right now so I didn't want them to start dropping like flies if this one had something that could spread.

    White Plymouth Rock white feet??

So we have had multiple breeds of standard size hens for a year now but recently got more chicks from a fee store to expand our flock. We got 5 white Plymouth Rock chicks (our first time for this breed) and they are now about 5 weeks old. 4 have yellow feet and 1 has white/gray feet. It looks...
