Topic of the Week - How long do chickens live?

I proudly present: Fuzzy Slippers! My son bought her when he was in second grade, she was purchased with a couple other bantam chicks form the local feed store when they were 3 days old (we still have the receipt). She just kept going, kept laying eggs, kept ferociously protecting her best...

    Hawk deterrent

I have Belgian d'Anvers and d'Uccles (and a few rescue chickens). Hawks can be a BIG problem when free ranging little guys like mine. I have red tail hawks and in the fall/winter occasional migrating Coopers hawks. Most of my losses came from juvenile hawks that see chickens as easier to get...

What do YOU use to collect your eggs?

I found a collapsible egg basket at a junk shop a few years ago and liked it so much that I decided to try to find another. Imagine my surprise when I discovered my basket was made in France right after WWII and was gold "coated" (probably means gold washed rather than plated)! I have found...

Sorry, forgot to include the year we got her--2000! That makes her 16 this year.

    How long do chickens live?

Here is our oldest chicken, she is a Belgian booted d'Uccle (Barbu d'Uccle). We got her the same year as our Aussie-mix dog. He passed away in April this year, she is still going strong. We were still showing her until a few years ago, she won her last best of breed when she was 10!

Thanks for the comment! My original intent was to use this coop for breeding groups and quickly realized the potential this design had for folks getting started in keeping backyard chickens. My little bantams will also cram too many of themselves in the coops and when I close the coops in the...

What is the longest living breed of chicken?

Belgian bearded d'Uccle (Barbu d'Uccle) 15 years old (we still have the receipt from the farm supply store) and still lays an occasional egg! She won her last best of breed in a show when she was 10!

My newest Belgian d'Anvers bantams at 6 months showing off their full adult plumage. Love these little beauties! The little cockerel is the tamest we have ever had, he lets us pick him up with no fuss and as you can see, just settles and fluffs out his feathers fetchingly! Thank you Aubrey...

So, pictures to evaluate for Aubrey and/or other knowledgeable folks here. I had four chicks hatch from my dun cuckoo BBB eggs. 2 are obviously cuckoo, and from reading recent comments I'm guessing that the one which has a large spot on the back of the head is (hopefully) female and the one...

Hi Aubrey, I know that your post is from a couple weeks ago, but I stumbled across this item and wanted to share it as it offers some explanation on how hens can turn into roosters. http://m.livescience.com/13514-sex-change-chicken-gertie-hen-bertie-cockerel.html Fascinating read. Enjoy!

My experience with my d'Anvers is the roos that we have hand-raised are very sweet and will follow you around like puppies, but are not much on being handled during the day. They are more inclined to cooperate with handling when they start roosting in the evening. Additionally, all our...

I recently bought 4 black d'Anvers from a family near me (southern Oregon), they said they bought about 20 from a breeder in Northern California. The d'Anvers have good form and type, and I am very pleased with them. The 2 hens won BV and RV recently. I see, celeste, your mention of being a...

You were in my neighborhood! I live in Talent (4 miles north of Ashland). Interesting that your experience is with "pit bull" d'Anver roos--my experience is with (some) pit bull d'Uccle roos. Or one at least. I have one d'Uccle that can bruise my ankles pretty badly if he sneaks up on me...

That's her picture in my avatar--she was raised by my son when he was in 2nd grade. He named her Fuzzy Slippers. She has been shown several times and each time won best of breed (not bad for a hatchery chick!). She was the impetus for my getting interested in keeping and breeding bantams...
