I was alerted about this from another YouTube video where he mentioned a family with back yard chickens who were tested with high amounts of lead in their blood. The culprit was lead leaching from those black rubber feed bowls, then being passed thru the eggs into the family.
I tested one of my...
I followed up on this feeder on a different post for some reason.
If you are using pellets or crumble, I don't recommend this feeder.
The pellets seem to come out the top more than the bottom, and after a few weeks the pellets at the bottom became moldy.
I posted a video review at:
This may work well for different kinds of feed, but for standard chicken pellets or crumble, its a fail.
Crumble, as expected, is just too fine to work well in a spring system, so I tried Pellets.
The spring seems to release more pellets from the top than the bottom, and after two weeks there...
Hey,
Checking in from Anderson.
This is my first summer having chickens. I've got a small flock of 1 rooster and 4 hens and getting a steady supply of eggs.
I have way to many chicken videos on my YouTube page from building my coop and feeders and just general new chicken owner stuff. Pretty...
I just pop em in the toaster oven for about 5 - 10 minutes at about 350 - 400.
As other said, its to kill off any bacteria and makes em more brittle and easier to crush.
Just posting this short clip before I paste together all the other ones from today.
There is a definite learning curve for the chickens, but after a couple of hours, and stealing their normal feeder from them, and slapping it for them several times, they have finally figured it out.
So why...
Welcome, I'm also a noob and learning.
Never tried a fake egg, but when they laid on the ground or elsewhere I moved their egg to the box and left it for about a day, that seemed to do the trick. Once they get the hang of it they'll use the nesting boxes all the time.
Also, what are you using...
Chickens currently have the option of their old feeder or the new contraption.
As of 1pm, chickens are still trying to figure this thing out. No pecks on the spring yet seen.
At my 3pm lunch break, noticed one hen pecking at the spring, but they still are going for the easier feed in the old...
I have a Black Americauna Roo and hen, plus 3 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte hens.
If I hatch the eggs from the wyandottes, do I end up with Easter Eggers or some other breed?
I currently have an Amazon bucket feeder and have the same concerns.
After much searching on Youtube, I have decided to make a variant of this style of feeder:
It is hung off the ground and releases food only when the chicken pecks the striker at the bottom of the bucket.
I've started to build...
Welcome aboard.
One tip, Vinyl Flooring. Makes clean up a bunch easier.
Check your local Lowes, Home Depot etc and see if they have any remnants available.
I was able to get enough vinyl flooring for my coop for $5 by asking if they had any scrap.
I bought the same feeders and water cups on Amazon.
The feeder works great, but because the Amazon order for the water cups came late I had to grab the waterer seen in the picture from Tractor supply. I'm happy enough with the waterer I have that I haven't messed with the cups yet.
I was...
Yes it does. :)
For now I'm cleaning it out with a stick or my fingers, but I plan to take the angle grinder and cut off the last inch or so where it closes so the bedding can fall freely out of the channel.
