    Bedding being ate?

My hens also eat a bit of the bedding (pine shavings) when it is fresh. They have all kinds of real chicken food, sand and seashells. I doesn't seem to be harmful to them.

    The Paleo Diet

I tried it for a couple of months, and it worked great. I lost a few kilos and felt more happy and had a lot more energy. It turned out to be tough to stick to it in the long run though, partially because the rest of my household hates veggies. It is interesting to shop for food on paleo. 90% of...

    New to chickens! :)

Welcome to BYC! Chickens are easier to feed than horses, just put a big feeder in the run and they will stop eating when they are full. They will always prefer their foraged food to dry pellets. Have fun! Orps are a lovely breed btw.

Best way to keep water from freezing?

I use one of these: http://www.lantbutiken.se/butik/3820-9145-large/varmekabel-till-vattenautomater.jpg It is really versatile and keeps my un-insulated 10l water bottle heated just fine, so far it has been -6C here. You could easily stick it down an attachment pipe if it is wider than 2-3cm.

    Coop conundrum...

I´d vote for a slant roof. It is easier, cheaper and still looks good on such a small building. Put your effort into some clever and work-saving maintainance issues instead, like making it easy to clean or perhaps an automatic waterer.

Gardening with chickens (and other poultry)

This year I did not fence my garden and the chickens devoured the kale and rhubarb in a matter of hours. I do not blame them, but next year there will be a fence around those plants. However, I noticed that they left some plants alone, tasted a small bite and then just ignored them. Those plants...

    DO OAK LEAVES RUIN COMPOST?

I have heard this before too, but I think it is exaggerated, the leaves take a bit longer to decompose than other leaves though. This year I dumped ten wheelbarrows of oakleaves in the chicken run, hoping that the chicks will turn and fertilize it for me. Hopefully this will speed up the...

    Free Ranging Chickens

I let mine free range whenever I am in the yard, and keep them locked up in a quite roomy run at all other times. We have cars, hawks, eagles, foxes, somtimes even lynx or wolf here, so I don´t dare to let them range without me keeping an eye on them. They are clever enough to hide in the bushes...

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Thank you! I built the coop and run in about one and a half week this summer. The run is fine but i have some ideas of what not to do when I build the next coop . So far it has been -4.8C inside the coop when it was -10C outside, the chicks had no problem with that. As winter temperatures here...

Long time lurker, first time poster.

Hello I got my first hens a few months ago and must say i love the hobby of keeping chickens so far. I live in Sweden and the right now I got my hands full trying to make sure my little flock will make it safe through the winter. The pics below show some of the chickens and their coop. I...
