I've found a couple eggs in the run. We don't have access to the run directly so I have to get in the coop and use-of all things-the poop scooping rake, which you can rotate with a flick of the wrist, it becomes an egg cradling device. And those eggs are separated by a layer of paper towel.
Purple flowers, right? No idea what it's called either, my mom told me not to eat it as a kid too.
I think you just convinced me to start a little garlic crop!
Please excuse me. I have been devoting more time to the gym than sitting online and read a week's worth of posts yesterday. Not trying to be a booger. I am sorry for your loss and that it came from a family member.
Further demonstrating my ability to put my foot in my mouth, as I was typing...
I'm happy to hear about first eggs! But I'm also sad about the loss. (Was VintageGem the only one? Not trying to be a booger.) That's a pain I have not felt yet. I know it's coming one day and I know it'll be bad. I know i'll have to try to remember that I will have given my ladies the...
Thank you very much, Aart. Before I'd read your post, I had dragged the can into the back patio to be in the sunlight. I figured if they want to hatch/grow in the dark of my garage, sunlight probably won't do them any favors. I wanted to hose the can off but due to bathroom/plumbing...
Thank you, Mary! Oyster shell it is.
On to my next two chicken related problems: Hazel hasn't left the nest box all morning. She took a few pecks toward me, though I managed to get an egg out from under her. I don't know if it was hers or another girl's. She just started laying, could she...
Annnnnd, I just had my first breakfast of backyard eggs! Didn't even use salt/pepper; I wanted to taste the eggs themselves and I'm glad I did. "How does it taste?" Like you'd think an egg should taste. Hard to describe, but delicious, and you know it when you're chewing it. Definitely a...
Congrats to your new pullets, and all the other new layers here too! I like your colors. I have done some thinking and decided to supplement with calcium for the next few days at least, or maybe even until they finish their old bag of chick starter. Crushed eggshells work, right? I really...
I got my first eggs yesterday! Two in the same nesting box! One is almost jumbo sized, the other one is smaller. Hazel had to be one of the first layers, I don't know who gave us the other one. Woo hoo! So today i'll go to TSC for some layer crumbles.
Has anyone been drinking Jobu's rum? Is very bad.
I do love this state. I've been known to spontaneously start cleaning garbage from parks. I want to stay here for the rest of my life. I love the cities, the country, and God's country (The UP.)
Otherwise, bathroom renovation continues...
Oh boy. Yes, and for the record I am the dork that names her car. Chickens are Torrey, Abbey, Hazel, Penny (HennyPenny), Sunshine, and Taco. I almost went with an "O" sound theme, I was thinking Taco, Loco, Poco, Coco. I've heard "Rockstar" themed names including Eggy Pop, Paul McCluckney...
x3, or more by the time I got to this post.
I'm SO going to CS next year. I want to see other chicken people. GAAMPs meetings don't count. I hope ya'll had a good time.
Do chickens drool? A few weeks ago, I thought I caught Hazel drool out (sorry, gross) a little bit of clear fluid. I...

Life has a funny, nay, hysterical way of doing that. First, I asked my boss a few weeks ago for a couple light weeks, as I am feeling burnt out and have an impending bathroom remodel. Then I get sent to another (busier) store to help between the two locations. Boyfriend starts tearing...
Thanks! Mine never took to sleeping in nest boxes, so I guess it's a non-issue. Phew. And those girls have bottomless-pit type stomachs, like their momma hen (me). So it'll be another bag of chick starter, I'm sure that'll be the last.
Long story? Let it fly. You're in the right place...
Thanks, 1muttsfan. (shudders, though.) My parents are in Sterling Heights. It's 10 minutes from here.
My lavender is just starting to bloom. My pic needs an update, it will probably be Henny Penny, my little beauty queen, in front of the lavender if I can get her to hold still. (Starts...
I work in a grocery store that I do not wish to name publicly. Our eggs are $1.59 right now, and I think that's the inflated price. They are produced here in MI. I think our price is pretty competitive-we're probably taking a loss, but our customers are buying them, including the party store...
Welcome to the chicken world! I think your question was already answered; they don't need grit if they can forage. This is my first year with a flock as well. (6 brown production types from TSC.) Have fun & see ya around this thread.
I saw one of my girls eat a mosquito out of the air...
SO TRUE.
X4! Regarding Opa's sweet coop.
My chickens actually DON'T go bananas for mealworms like I thought they would. I've sprinkled them, put them in with their regular feed, given them to the ladies out of my hand...I thought they'd riot for them, but no.
Chickens eat mosquitos, yes? Providing they can catch those little bloodsuckers.
Cuteness alert-yes!
Crud.
(No experience) I've heard of putting frozen water bottles under a broody to cool her temps ? Just a thought.
Ugh. So, yeah, let me get this straight: HPAI can be carried by...
