I had wanted to leave the light on for daytime, but it gets so cold here that if the birds were laying then the eggs would freeze if I didn't get there soon enough. We had about 5 weeks of anywhere from -25°C to -40°C
The birds were a few days old back last June, so hopefully they'll start soon! The sexlinks are on their second season as is the silky. I bought the heritage breeds as I didn't realize how fast the production breeds can "wear out", so I'm hoping to have a combination of birds to make up the...
Hi! My sexlinks have started laying daily this week, none of the heritage breeds have yet though. I'm wondering what to expect? I have 2 Amaracaunas, a Barnevelder, a Silky, and 2 buck eyes, and a Brahma. Also, yay for egglaying season!
My bad on the poor lighting. I did figure out the answer though, they're barnevelders. I bought another one today and another Americana as apparently it was actually the ameracauna that was eaten by what is most likely a weasel. Thanks for your response though!(the other chicks are buckeyes. I...
I know the big one is a barnevelder(had 2 but on got eaten by something) and the yellowy ones are Ameracauna's, what are the one's in the middle of the picture?
We had ducks but an unfortunate incident with a rather large owl left us with no ducks. Our ducks were not really all that friendly or lovable to be totally honest. They were incredibly messy compared to the chickens, and kind of a nightmare in regard to watering over the winter since they...
Well, I just watched an enlightening video on shearing one angora rabbit and spinning the wool, neat process! I'm going to look into hobby clubs here, get a better feel for this specific hobby
Thanks for the info! I kind of figured they were more for the pelts then shearing, which is good for dual purpose anyway :) I'll check things out more for sure!
I have seen a few Pinterest pins in my search for rabbit hutch ideas, we have been looking into meat rabbits. I came across angora rabbits and now I'm intrigued. Are these rabbits you shear? Or is it raise and skin and also eat? Just curious really, we have a niche market where I live for things...
Thanks for the input, I wasn't sure! But you'd be surprised, recently a some locals drove 4 hours and had their chickens butchered, bright them back and sold them for like $56 a chicken, my husband knows someone who bought 2...lol. probably dependent on the region I suppose.
Hello again! So, my ducks are the bullies of the coop...lol. Our silkie rooster is having his feathers plucked on the back of his neck by the ducks, and they commandeered the heat lamp from the pullets we just put in there. I'm thinking that gating off a section of the coop just for the ducks...
Ahh Okay, I misunderstood what I read before then. I interpreted that they basically die by age 2 or 3 from over production lol. That makes me feel better. Do people generally eat unproductive birds? I don't know what we'll do months future but I don't object to utilizing a bird in its entirity.
I'm so excited that we got our first egg layers, the chicks are adorable. We have 6, plus the two silkies. I am thinking we'll add to the flock for sure, I'm thinking 12 egg layers is a good number for a family of 6? I read now that sex links have a short life expectancy, is there anyway to help...
