Wood vs. plastic for nest boxes?

I've tried a little bit of everything, but my hens prefer plain ol' cardboard boxes with the front cut out and hay inside. When they get too badly soiled, they go in the compost bin and I put out another one.

Help! 11 degrees ºF outside and need some water!

I use bird bath heaters ... just plop them in and they keep the water an even, semi-warm, temperature.

    Searching for the perfect waterer

Just be careful not to use ACV with anything metal ... the acid can cause metals to leach into the water and will also cause it to rust.

    Searching for the perfect waterer

I use a 6 gallon rubber horse feed tub (it's about 4" high) with a birdbath heater in it ... works great. I put 4 12" pavers together to make a square pad for it to sit on so they don't kick dirt into it.

    Blue eggs

I have a few ameraucanas, an auraucana and EEs that lay blue eggs, the pale blue ones. But my crested creme legbars lay a gorgeous blue egg ... much darker with a touch of a turquoise tint.

Fly Control, anyone find something that works, and is chicken safe?

Golden Malrin ... I have horses and this stuff really works! It is toxic, so has to be used in bait stations so chickens or other animals can't get to it. It's expensive, but worth it ...

    Possible 'henopause'?

I have to agree with Barbara. In peak season, I get a couple dozen eggs a day ... now I'm lucky to get 3 eggs a day. It's seasonal. It happens this way (for me) every year. I have a mixed flock of about 15 different breeds and ages from 6 months to 4 years old. They molt and slow waaaaaaaaay...

That's kinda what I was thinking, but am a peafowl newbie. She did sit last year, so I was hoping she would this year. Thanks!

How long are pea eggs viable?

My peahen started laying on 5/16/16. She has 10 eggs now and still isn't sitting. How long can eggs stay in the nest without being incubated by the hen before they are no longer viable?

How Can I Get A Hen UN Broody?

Yeah, that's why I got Leghorns ... but, believe me, they DO go broody! And I almost think they are more stubborn about it once it happens. I learned my lesson last year. I tried to wait one out, moved her out of the nest, took her eggs, etc., (no starving, dunking, swinging or isolation). I...
