I live in middle Tennessee. I'm sure there are plenty of chicken owners around here but I don't know how to find them. I know some sell eggs at the farmer's market. Maybe I'll try there on Saturday. Thanks for the suggestion and the reassurance! :-)

Good idea. My 15 yr old has been my "right hand man" as we learn to take care of these animals. She is really loving it. I'll have her come with me for the moral support and also so she can learn and become familiar with how we need to handle them. Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial! I am working tonight but will do this when I get home, before they wake up. I have held and checked all hens previously but this molt has her running from me. At least I'm attributing it to the molt. Also, thanks for the reassurance on the rooster. I wasn't...
Like I said, I'm a little afraid of him. My mom was mauled by a rooster and he nearly killed her. That story leaves me a bit apprehensive. So, after dark I can take him off the roost...how do I hold him and work on his eye? Is he likely to get aggitated? Should I stay in the dark coop and...
Not sure if there is a better place to post a couple of questions but this is really the only thread I read regularly and trust the responses you all have to offer.
I have a hen that is molting. Since I've only had chickens for 3 weeks this is my first experience with molt. She looks so...
Thanks for the reassurance! I have not actually looked in their coop when they're in there during the day. I will make a point to have me or my daughter do that tomorrow just to see what's up in there. We have seen the rooster fluffed up and in a little hole outside a couple of times but he...
I've been a chicken "farmer" for about 3 weeks...since we bought a house that came w/ 13 hens and a rooster. I'm certainly loving this experience but this winter weather is throwing a curveball at me. I'm worried about the flock. I feel like I shouldn't be. My head says they're fine. They...
I hit this post and wanted to ask a question berfore reading further so my apologies if someone asks and it's been answered in the next 4 pages. :-) Why do you change the times of day that you feed them? Is it so they get most of their nutrition from foraging through the warmer months? Thanks!
Thanks so much for the advice! I will start FF next Tuesday (I work from now until then and being gone 14 hrs each day that I work limits my time to start something new and observe results). Can't wait to see how it works out for my birdies.
We just purchased a house that came w/ 13 chickens and a rooster. I'm really enjoying getting to know my new flock and learning how to keep them happy, healthy, and productive. We live a natural life in our home so my plan is to carry that philosophy into my chicken keeping, as well. I'm super...
