I have a chick that is about a week old. It had really bad pasty butt. I cleaned it up yesterday and checked today to find it covered again. While rinsing it this time, I noticed that off to the left of the belly button area (above and to the left of the vent when it is laying on it's back) that...
Rachel, I just replied to you on Facebook. (Megan Curtis). I'll post my reply here so people can see what I said in regards to the others telling you they weren't pure.
Emily, that is correct. The Ameraucana Association doesn't accept silkied as an Ameraucana feather type, so the chickens...
I know how that goes. Since I am self-employed, people assume I sit around and watch TV all day just waiting for them to call and ask me for favors. ;)
We are feeding non-GMO feed and the chickens are pastured in tractors that are moved daily. We are advertising our eggs as non-GMO. When people ask about organic I explain that we don't feed anything that isn't orgNic, but that the birds do eat bugs they find throughout the day.
We have 4 chicks from the same hatch that were in our house in a 4 x 5.5 ft area. This Saturday we let them outside in a pen of them same size for the day because it was about 70. While they were outside, we set up their outdoor brooder, which is one of our small sheds. It is 4x8 ft. Today I...
3 of them have very similar sized tail feathers, but that one has much smaller tail feathers. They are shorter. Think there is any significance? That one is also the most standoffish.
We have 4 Ameraucana chicks that will be 5 weeks old on Fri/Sat. I know it is still a little early, but any guesses on gender? These came out of some B/B/S eggs.
These are the largest and darkest two.
This is the lightest and one of the smallest two.

I just eggtopsied the second hatch. We hatched 3 out of 15. 3 Eggs were tossed at lockdown and one pipped but died before hatching. That left 8 eggs. Here is what I found...

Ok, need some advice. Our first hatch was 4 out of 12. This time we are at 3 of 15. 3 eggs were bad at lockdown, 3 have hatched, 1 pipped yesterday and died today before zipping or hatching. The other 8 have not pipped and day 23 just started. Temp has been 100-102 in a still air. Humidity has...
In my experience, the area right under the heat plate is heated to 95. It doesn't warm the air around it, but the chicks don't need the whole brooder to be that warm. They just need a place to warm up. I would think it being 50 wouldn't be too awful for them. Maybe open up a vent in the basement...
Have you checked out this thread? It addresses the cost. Premier's plate is actually cheaper than a heat lamp over the course of brooding one batch of chicks. The cost for the heat lamp will show up on a higher energy bill than that of a heat plate...
