Upright posture, Head shaking- Entire Flock

Sorry to hear that your EE is dealing with this chronically. It was comforting to read that it isn't automatically a death sentence, though. Every time I notice something wrong with one of the girls I automatically think "She is going to die!" so to see all 8 acting weird last night had me...

Upright posture, Head shaking- Entire Flock

Update today- This morning crops were empty in all birds except for one (Annie), whose was still rather large and hard. The other 7 were very exited when I moved the food bin back inside, but Annie was not interested in eating. None of them are doing the weird posture, head pump thing today...

Upright posture, Head shaking- Entire Flock

Oh, Also wanted to add that they started a new bag of chicken food a 4-5 days ago. Country Feeds layer pellets from Country Max.

Upright posture, Head shaking- Entire Flock

What would you worm with? I think I remember some wormers not being suitable during moulting because they impact feather growth. And thank you! The past few weeks have been a blur.

Upright posture, Head shaking- Entire Flock

Hi everyone, All 8 of my hens are acting strangely tonight and I am very worried. This is the first sign of anything wrong that I've noticed other than thinking earlier today "Huh, there isn't as much poop on the poop board as I would have expected" when I went to scrape it. But, to be fair, I...

    Disappearing Round Worm Mystery

I understand the life cycle. The adult worms live in the intestines. If the birds are treated and the worms are killed, how would an adult worm be absorbed as protein in the intestine when it was never mechanically digested? Intestines can only absorb what has already been broken down into...

    Worming with Horse Wormer

I just came to that realization. Thanks so much for the clarification, though. Hopefully I'm not the only person to ever be confused by this!

    Worming with Horse Wormer

Nevermind- I think I figured it out! When you say 50mg/kg, you mean 50mg of THE DRUG, not the PASTE. So, since the drug in the paste is only making up 10% of the weight, you need to multiply by 10. Duh! Don't mind me...

    Worming with Horse Wormer

Either I am misunderstanding something or your units are off. There are 1000mg in 1g, therefore 50mg equals 0.05g (not 0.5g, as you have written). I do believe all your dosage recommendations are 10 fold higher than they should be. Have I missed something? I'm about to dose my chickens...

    Disappearing Round Worm Mystery

Thanks, dawg, for the quick reply! They very likely may have excreted most of them during the first 24 hours. I wasn't checking their poops in the run that day, only check the poop board presents the next morning. I do have to say, though, I'm not sure I can accept "the worms are absorbed as...

Worming with Horse Wormer (Safeguard & Panacur)

A kitchen scale will do the trick. They are typically $20-30. I balance a clear tote on it and put the chicken in the tote (without a lid, of course!). You can see through the clear plastic to read the weight. Casportpony: I've read, re-read, and re-re-read your post more time than I can...

    Disappearing Round Worm Mystery

Hi All! I was out of town for a week while my boyfriend took over chicken care. He works nights, so had to lock our 8 hens (who are 8 months) in the coop at about 5pm for the week I was gone. They usually have free range of the backyard. When I got back, the coop was in desperate need of...

    silver laced wyndottes

I would increase their lighting gradually by maybe 30 minutes a day until they have 14 hours of light and see if that does the trick. Just because your other hens are still laying under the current lighting conditions doesn't mean these two aren't more sensitive about it. Good luck!

    Hi Everybody!

Hello all! I'm new here... got to jump into chicken keeping last summer when we bought a house with existing coop/run and the seller let us keep 3 of his hens. We've since lost two of those hens to a raccoon attack (hard-learned lessons...) in the fall. The remaining hen is an Easter Egger...

Pecking Order- How much aggression is too much?

The EE has been separated most of the time due to her behavior. She's been allowed to share space with them 4 times and attacked them, so she was separated again. I can continue to keep her separated, but she is clearly not happy being isolated and I wonder if that has contributed to her bad...

How much light are they getting daily? They should be getting at least 14 hours of light to encourage laying.

    silver laced wyndottes

Wyandottes lay brown eggs. Are you sure they aren't laying somewhere sneaky? At 7 months, they are of the age when they could be laying, but I don't think it's anything to be concerned about yet if they haven't laid yet. A sign that they will lay soon is that their combs will darken in color...

Pecking Order- How much aggression is too much?

Hi all, I'm new here and fairly new to chicken keeping. I'm not sure what to do right now and was hoping some more experienced chicken-folk can lend their opinions... My basic question: Am I just being too sensitive and need to let them work it out or is my older hen really being too...
