    help with hatching

were they shrink-wrapped? May have been a humidity issue. Shipped eggs or from your chickens? Theres so many things that could have caused that. Sorry for your loss, I got upset when I lost 2 at day 12.

    Fermented feed timing question.

You can start FF from day one. All chicks will benefit from it, not just meat birds. We feed our laying flock FF and have had wonderful results.

Eggs set on 2/11! Who needs a hatch buddy?

I thought lockdown started at the end of day 18? I have quite a few more growing than I thought a few days ago. My 10yo daughter helped me candle again and thought them moving around was the greatest thing ever! I still have 1 egg with an iffy aircell, still kind of moves but the baby is...

    A couple FF questions

How many birds are you feeding? A 5 gal bucket 3/4 full will last my 13 3 days. I was going through a 50 lb bag of feed in a week and once I switched to FF it lasts just shy of a month. My coop is not nearly as smelly and the girls (and boy) feathers are so much prettier! I am loving it! My...

    A couple FF questions

My first batch was about 2 lbs of feed, it swells up a lot! 2 lbs of feed filled my 5 gal bucket about 3/4 or more once it was soaked. I used a couple of splashes, maybe 2-3 Tbsp of ACV to get it going. Mine is inside around 65 degrees and took about 4 days to get fermented, cooler will take longer.

Holes in eggs and double yolkers... Help!

We got a lot more double yolkers within the first 3-4 months after our hens started laying.

    Honkers in Alaska

We had a "hut" for ours with a light that would be turned on in January and usually my March or April we were getting a few eggs. Just like with chickens, artificial light helps to start up egg production. If she's setting in the box she's probably getting ready to start laying.

    Roos? CM or BR?

The taller one in pic 1 looks like a roo for sure! The comb is already very large. Not sure on which breed, I don't have either of those but that looks exactly like our Black sex link roos when they were younger. Usually you can send photos via email to the hatcheries and they can help identify...

    help with hatching

From my understanding that usually means your temps were slightly lower than recommended. I have discovered hot and cold spots in my incubator so have to move the eggs around at least once a day into a new spot

Holes in eggs and double yolkers... Help!

That's definitely been pecked. Keep an eye out for the egg eater. I have golf balls in our most used nest boxes and that seems to help some. Collecting eggs a few times a day is really the best way I've found to prevent eggs from being eaten. Double yolkers are pretty common, we get about 1 a...

    Honkers in Alaska

I believe the bigger one is a male and smaller a female. When I was a kid we had 14 or 15 Toulouse and would always listen to their "voices" to tell which was which. Females have a higher pitch and the males also stand taller, necks stretched out more whereas females will be more relaxed.

    A couple FF questions

They should like it just fine! If they seem like they're not really eating it just leave it in there, don't give them a choice and they will start eating it when they get hungry. I made the mistake of leaving dry feed out for mine when I first started in case they didn't care for it and of...

    A couple FF questions

I also add other things to my feed and they seem to really enjoy it! I'll put BOSS or corn if it's cold, millet, oats, soaked alfalfa pellets (in the winter for greens). When they see the BOSS in there it's like Christmas morning! They all run over and start picking them out as fast as they can!

    A couple FF questions

I don't keep mine covered in water either. Mine is very thick and that eliminates the step of straining it. I use a ladle to scoop mine out and it holds together rather well like really thick mud.

    Cackle hatchery shipping days???

I am in Alaska and get chicks from Cackle. I receive them the morning of the 3rd day (ship date counted as day 1). My next order will ship on Monday May 5th and be here bright and early Wednesday May 7th. It depends on what time yours get shipped. They have to have all orders to the PO by 6 pm...

    A couple FF questions

When I first started it took about 4 days for the bubbles and the "beer" smell to start. I use a trough style feeder and one of those 3 gal. black rubber feed bowls set on a brick. When I feed I scoop out the amount I need then add another scoop (holds roughly 1 lb) to the already fermented feed...

    how many hens per rooster?

There's really no perfect answer, everyone will tell you different. We keep 15 hens per rooster, some say up to 20 or 25 others will say no more than 10. As for space, usually about 4 sq ft per bird is good. I have 16 birds in a 8x10 coop so that's a little more than 4 per bird. I feed my own...

Eggs set on 2/11! Who needs a hatch buddy?

I was trying at first to tilt the eggs in the carton lol. Found out pretty quickly to put something under the side to tilt the whole thing! I'm just leaving them alone. I'll candle again Friday to make sure the darkness in each egg is roughly the same, should be about the whole egg at that...

Eggs set on 2/11! Who needs a hatch buddy?

it's hard to deal with! Especially since the Marans were the breed my 10yo daughter chose to hatch for homeschool. She researched and looked at a ton of different breeds and kept going back to them. I found a breeder and ordered knowing the hatch rate would be lower, they did an awesome job...
