East Bay, California: 12-week-old Speckled Sussex and Silver-Laced Wyandotte roosters

These handsome guys are healthy and sweet, but I can't keep them where I live... they're from Mt Healthy Hatchery in Ohio, hatched second week of January. (And I practice extreme biosecurity here—they're kept in a covered coop, have never been around any birds except their flock mates who came...

Another suspected roo... what do you think?

Sorry all, I just realized I added the wrong pic… the one above is indeed a silver-laced wyandotte… here’s the speckled sussex (not crowing, but seems like a prominent comb for a hen… but I’m not experienced w SS, so would love input from the experts!

Another suspected roo... what do you think?

This one is not crowing, but that's a pretty prominent comb for 12 weeks, isn't it? (I haven't had a Speckled Sussex before, so I'll defer to the experts, but I know what the answer probably is. :(

    Uh-oh—is this a roo?

She/he isn't visibly distinct from a hen yet, but this was her, this morning (12 weeks). Doesn't sound quite like other young roos I've had start crowing at this stage, but.... https://vimeo.com/1073799265/ccfba5772d?share=copy

Grandpa’s feeder: chickens throwing feed out

Thank you, Al! These are pellets, and uniform, but I can see how anything more varied would exacerbate the problem. I will make the modifications you suggested—very helpful and I appreciate it!

Grandpa’s feeder: chickens throwing feed out

Hi everyone, I hope you’re all enjoying the holidays. I wanted to see if anyone has the problem I’m having with the Grandpa’s feeder: when I fill it up, within a couple of hours my girls are scattering a lot of feed all over the run. (And they don’t seem to eat most of the scattered feed, so...

Experimental Bumblefoot removal success!! (The Easy Way!!)

very helpful thread, thank you @Katakornchicks! When you say make a new cut each time, do you mean that you have to actually *make* a cut separate from the previous scab?

Chicken staying in nest box, no egg...

Hi everyone, I'd love to get your thoughts on my Ayam Cemani, Wednesday's behavior... for context, she's about a year old, always been very healthy, and has been laying about an egg a day since September (before that it was less frequent. now she's outlaying all my 'laying' breeds, like my...

6 week old Swedish Flower Hens - any guesses as to sex?

Hi all, I hatched these three SFHs and they're 6 weeks old. I'm wondering if anyone experienced with the breed has any guesses as to whether they're hens or cockerels? (Can't really tell by their behavior, they're all very friendly and assertive.) 1. White one (mostly white, with just a little...

Help: how long to let chick hatch unaided?

Hi all, I know this general question has been asked a lot before, but in searching I couldn't find an answer to exactly where mine is at... basically, this guy started pipping about 27 hours ago. He's made good progress, and still moving a bit periodically, but hasn't enlarged the hole in at...

    Birchen Marans Thread

Hi everyone! I received 3 Blue Birchen Marans chicks from Meyer yesterday, and I wanted to confirm the color variations. I'm new to the breed, but my understanding is that when breeding for blues, results are typically 50% blue, 25% black, and 25% splash. Here's what I have, and my assumptions...

    California - Northern

Hi everyone! I hope you and your flocks are all staying safe through the storms. My guys arrived today, and per my previous post I had to order more chicks than I needed from Meyer Hatchery. I'm in love with them already, but can't keep them all. So I have some darling, high-quality day-old...
