    I'm using pine shavings and a few sheets of newspaper on the bottom. I change the water a few times a day as they looove to scratch and dig and kick up the shavings. I do a complete change out of the shavings/paper every 3 days. I probably could go longer but I like to keep it really clean.

    Hi- I'm new to this and my chicks are only 14 days old today...I'm planting some new fruit plants this week and I've read different things about avocados. Is it just the pits that are toxic to birds?

    Thank you all-that's rather encouraging actually! So 1/2" it is! I've priced it at two places and that stuff is going to cost a bundle but it will be worth it! About the coop door...are predators the only reason to keep it closed nightly?

    Thank you for the replies! That makes me feel better! As far as 1/4" v 1/2" mesh, i was thinking 1/4" would be better in regards to mice. Is that not so? I'm curious as to why the larger of the two is best. Thanks again!

    I started building the coop/run this week and the more I read the more nervous I'm becoming! I live in a residential area with fenced in yards (6' high fences between neighbors) and the predators I am concerned w/ are hawks, possums and mice. I have never seen a raccoon here but the neighbors...

    Thanks! Yeah - I'm not a total stickler about the grass, but I'd like to reasonably maintain it. I totally could deal w/moving it frequently if I can manage to make one that is movable in terms of weight :/ I'm afraid that w/the size I'd like (big) I won't be able to construct one that I can...

    How frequently will I need to move the tractor in order to keep my grass alive? And will allowing them to free range cause it to die in places? I really am wondering......I plan to get 4 hens to start and haven't pinned down the size of the tractor as of yet...Any and all input is appreciated :)
