My Hamburgs are good, consistent layers and beautiful birds. Although a little flighty, they warm up to you after a while and are very curious. Definitely "personality" birds.
Does it have to be exotic? Because that looks like a Barred Rock to me. Funny, I got the same thing -- a free chick with my Murray McMurray order, and he turned out to be an Egyptian Fayoumi rooster with a crossed beak. Look up the breed, they're funny looking. Again, my thought is Barred Rock...
If he can't bear weight or, apparently, feel his leg, a splint might not work, if he can't move it anyway. I'd go with the sling, since they can be easily made at home, and might help his leg get better. Send updates! Good luck!
Well, we have a run that we use, but in nice weather we also let them out in our yard... Although only when somebody is home with them. They are not free-range. Since today was beautiful, I went out to let them browse and dust bathe in their favorite spots. We live in the country, and the only...

Hi all,
I was inside at about 6:30 this morning and heard squawking from our flock of seventeen chickens. I raced outside and who should I see but a golden retriever chasing one of my chickens (an Americana) into a bush and emerging with the bird dangling from its mouth. After the necessary...
Look for spur developement. Although some hens (I have one!) have spurs, all roosters do. In the early stages, they are just little bumps on the inside of the chick's leg. Also, rooster's combs and wattles often begin to redden before that of the hens. And of course, pecking order. Does one or...
One thing that I have heard can help is building a sling, if the bird can't stand very well. You can use a cardboard box or wood as a frame, and rig soft netting or towels to keep his/her legs off of the ground. You can keep the food and water within easy reach of the bird. I don't know if this...
