Anyone getting Chukar eggs yet? Dust bath help?

Occasionally late September (but more often mid October) is when our Chukars begin to lay. 40-50 eggs per hen/per season (yearly) is expected. Some strains will lay more, some will lay less. I would advise against breeding any birds that produce less than 30 eggs/season. This is our experience...

    Hybrid Pheasants

:yuckyuck This all just reminds me of a George Bernard Shaw quote about wrestling with a pig.... Sigh.....

Has anyone ordered pheasant eggs from Oakwood game farms?

Yes you should..... You've already been 'bitten by the bug' so holding off on buying an incubator will only delay the time between you actually having one :) I'd recommend the $180 one as opposed to the (very) cheap $20 one. This is just my opinion. I am no expert and I don't claim to be, but...

Ringneck Pheasants- post your pics or questions.

The good birds are always interstate... i may need to move states i think! Do you know what the whites went for at auction? I doubt it would have been cheap!

I've never heard of platinums in OZ either Colescreek. I've seen the whites (unsure if they had buff on them though). I didnt look close enough! I was just surprised to see whites!

I think this is a hybrid chicken, thoughts please :)

I first thought that she may have had issues because she didn't grow although her siblings thrived. Then when she didn't develop feathering on her head I though possible hybrid. Now I'm confused! She seems happy enough so I guess only time will tell!

Has anyone ordered pheasant eggs from Oakwood game farms?

Yep, I agree with pheasantfrenzie. You would probably kill the lot. This is a very critical time in the incubation. You can by cheapy ones on ebay.... Worth having something (even a cheapy) just in case mother hen decides to stop sitting....

    Hybrid Pheasants

So you never purchased 6 Goldens that you thought were mutts? From an auction or a market if I recall correctly. You were worried that you didn't have pure bred birds to which Jimarcher responded 'Your mutts may be purebreds. Goldens do not achieve full color in their first year. Give them a...

Bemba, where did you get your whites from? I've been after some for a while but you rarely see them advertised here in Australia! I'm located in SA and would greatly appreciate any info on where I could obtain some :) Thanks in advance.

Has anyone ordered pheasant eggs from Oakwood game farms?

If you do It that way I'd recommend checking the hen regularly for hatched chicks. If I don't take the eggs away before they hatch I end up finding cold, dead pheasant chicks all around the chicken yard. I'd hate for you to hatch them only to loose them!

    Pheasants eating eggs

The only way to stop them is with the axe ;) Best not to sell them (unless their being sold as candidates for freezer camp!) as your only selling your problem to someone else.... I'd hate to buy a bird, wait all year for the season to start only to find I was sold a dud that eats her eggs!

Has anyone ordered pheasant eggs from Oakwood game farms?

Yes chickens will hatch pheasant eggs BUT when the pheasant chicks hatch they will run away from the hen. When I hatch pheasant chicks using hens as 'hatchers' I pull the eggs a day or two before their due to hatch and hatch them in an incubator. You can use the mother hens to raise them but you...

I think this is a hybrid chicken, thoughts please :)

I've read those threads and she does have the bald head associated with A guinea/chicken hybrid. I just wonder why she is so small. Maybe the Pekin genes in her? Either way she's fun to have around :)

I think this is a hybrid chicken, thoughts please :)

I would like to see what her chicks would come out like but I too suspect she won't lay eggs. If I was to breed her it would be back to a Pekin rooster or a jap bantam, smaller to avoid her being crushed. The thing is if she doesn't grow any more (and I suspect she won't) then I doubt any...

Pheasant chicks dropping like flies!! Help!!

I know this is an old post but I thought i'd offer my 2 cents :) I definitely think pine shavings was your problem. 1- They all died at roughly the same time, I think its because they just 'run out of energy' (from not being able to eat) and perished. 2- If it was coccidiosis you would more...

I added a new male to the run today

Thanks for clarifying maxpedley :) The yellow legs is a good sign he's a pure but I doubt there are actually any pure Goldens left, well at least here in Australia anyway. I recently purchased another male golden who has feathered out with a yellow band across his chest. Some people state this...

Then why did both Jimarcher and myself ask for pics of the birds you purchased that you thought were mutts?

I think this is a hybrid chicken, thoughts please :)

No he doesn't have any naked necks at all. I know he does have a few guinea fowl though and I suspected that she could be a cross from that? I'm just not sure that he had the guineas when he gave me the eggs she was hatched from. I honestly expected her to just not make it as she hasn't grown...

I added a new male to the run today

I'm curious as to how you can be so certain that he is 100% pure going on photos alone? I'm not doubting that the roo pictured is 100% pure Chrysolophus Pictus, just curious your reason for stating that he IS ACTUALLY 100% PURE GOLDEN PHEASANT?? If you could please explain your method of...
