I am new to Silkies. Great fun. Mad as hatters, very cute, and very friendly. I've kept Jerseys' , Americanas' and Light Sussex. There are always birds more friendly than others, but with the Silkies, almost all are friendly.

Help day 21 and nothing no pip

Hey WyandottH In the incubator i had chicks pip on day 23 once, and a successful hatch as i recall. Under the hen it can take a while longer than 21 days because you do not have a controlled environment. When you are sure in your own mind that it's run its course, take an egg, one at a time and...

    New coop construction

Thank you, I've left a ½"x 12" gap along the top at the back under an overhang and there are two small holes in the hatch, which is made from iron plate, formerly a sun shade base. It also has a light fitting and reflector for a red heat bulb for the colder months

    New coop construction

Thank you. Apart from the cladding, most of it was something else. The roof was a heavy door and the floor was a kitchen table 1¼" thick. I varnished the whole thing. It worked out cheaper than friendly wood preserver, has a deeper penetration and seals the wood completely. My Silkies look like...

I live on the Isle of Wight UK. I don't think my Roos are up to munch at the moment , freezing here. Any one know if the cold will stop my birds doing the business ? I have Jersey Giants & Light Sussex. 5 Cocks/17 hens. Laters

Does anyone else have to deal with this sort of reaction from people, when they find out you raise q

They are fun to see once they're all fluffed up. They remind me of a swarm of bee's. Those florescent tube lights are good and cheap to run--another good call Yeah they're not cheap here either !

Well it ain't the space, you've given them plenty. They need about 12 hrs light with warmth. Dirt baths are important too. Lol the first thing my birds do when i put their food on a tray is, sit in it , then roll about, then flick it everywhere. Give them some lettuce (whole leaves) or cucumber...

Couldn't agree more. Get them to take the PEPSI challenge with shop bought and BYC-chicken. Unfortunately for me , my kids have named all my birds. When i say we are having a chicken for dinner they expect it to be sat at the table with a knife and fork.

I have about 100 Chinese & 50 Japanese. Eggs litter the ground. The Jap's ain't big enough to eat, so it's the egg value. I sell 12 eggs for $1.70. With the money i get from chicken eggs, it pays for all the food for 24 chickens as well as the quail. In the last couple of weeks i found a...

Comment by 'yardraven' in item 'Jersey Giant'

I have 12 Jerseys, which i hatched. 12 eggs 12 chicks. They grow incredibly fast. Not the brightest of chickens, but very friendly. They are 4 months old and are as dippy as a child. Very curious and cheaky .

I feel a big smile creep across my face when they forget that I'm an ugly giant with giant hands, as they stampede over me to see what i have to eat in my hand. I have about 150 and i can't sit up, or shift my weight if i have a treat. I can feel 100's of these tiny feet exploring every thread...

This is the same Chinese in order of growth. Day 1 to 66. I have a similar prejudice here. People look at me with horror when i say you can eat the eggs. Even after i load them up with the benefits of quail eggs. I keep Chinese & Japanese Quail.
