I have read several post on this forum recommending sand, dirt, dust baths. So I started giving my quail bagged sand box sand and they loved it. However after several weeks I had quail dying, I suspected it might be the sand. I stopped giving them the sand and the deaths stopped and the quail...
I had a 7 week old hen die yesterday while passing an egg. I found her in the coop with the egg about 75% out and the egg and her vent were covered in blood. She started laying at 6 weeks which is the earliest time I have had a hen start laying. Before her death she did not show any signs of...
Beautiful craftsmanship, they should definitely keep all critters out. Your cages are very similar to mine, but I used 1/2 x 1/2 wire and only one layer which has keep the coons out. But they still try. If you used 1/4 " wire on the floor the droppings will not pass thru as easily as 1/2 inch...
I have a dozen quail that just turned a year old the 1st of May. Last year their 1st year of laying I got an egg almost daily from each of them. This year I only get about 6 per day. Is this natural being that they are in the 2nd year? There has been no changes to their environment or diet...
I .have had a couple of eggs that look similar to your picture both last year at the beginning of the laying season mine looked like small deflated balloons . After that couple of eggs last year and this year I had no more. I have always fed mine gamebird starter 28% protein and have ground...
I use the bottle in the warmer weather because the water does stay cleaner and the container is larger so I don't have to fill it as often. I think they do prefer the jar, if I offer both at the same time they will always use the jar. So I remove the jar and leave the bottle, which when the...
I use the jar with the base as you described. When the temps are warmer I use the rabbit bottle 2 quart size. I find that if I try to use the bottles in freezing temps the stems freeze very quickly due to their small size and the metal. I don't think they eat or drink after dark but I cant say...
When it is freezing out I put out fresh warm water in the morning than again iin early afternoon. I take the water out after dark so the water doesn't freeze to point of breaking the waterer. Works for me and the quail. Hope this helps.
As long as you have animals you will always have flies, but there are ways to help keep them under control This is how I do it. Flies like moisture, I keep my outside run covered with a tarp. The bottom of the outside run has 1/2 inch wire mesh floor. I put a dust bath pan in the outside run...
Nutrena gamebird starter at 28% protein is what I feed. Tractor supply has a chick starter that is 24% protein that I have also used when I couldn't find the nutrena. If you decide to use the tracor supply chick starter be sure to check the protein content as they also make one that is 20% which...
So far I have incubated 3 different hatches with my little giant incubator. During each period I had to adjust the thermostat numerous times to maintain the exact temp. Are there any incubators out there that will hold a constant temp? Is there anything I can do so mine will hold temp? It seems...
I was watching a Martha stuart show several months ago and she was using a serrated knife to open quail eggs. I tried it and it does work well but I still get chips in the mix. Does anyone have a way of opening the eggs chip free?
I had a rooster and 7 hens in one cage and 7 hens in another. They were all 10 weeks old. The cage with the 7 hens gave an average of 6 eggs aday. The cage that had the rooster in only 1 or 2 aday. The rooster was very active with the hens. I removed him and the very next day I got 6 eggs out of...
