    Incubator emergency

The clear one with the yellow lid, tends to not be insulated very well. So it does better if you tape foam or something to the outside.

    Incubator emergency

They still have a chance. But my personal opinion is get a different incubator. I had a little giant once and it was terrible. 2 eggs hatched out of 24. And I had to help those 2. I have had better luck with a foam cooler and a light.

Topic of the Week - Kitting out the Coop

X2 The year we had heat in the coop, the power went out and a few died, even though the temp was only about 0. When we don't have anything, everyone is fine even when it's -20*F.

Topic of the Week - Kitting out the Coop

While a coop would be good for predator protection, all your birds would need for weather is shelter (and shade) and it sounds like they have that with the goat barn. Your weather is not cold at all. Today it is 18*f here and we have 8 inches of snow. And the cold is still to come.

Topic of the Week - Kitting out the Coop

    - What bedding/material works best for the coop floor and the nest boxes? Wood chips. Medium sized ones. I have tried various other products and was disappointed. - How can you keep the coop dry, especially now, over the winter months? Just keep adding new bedding. - Roosts and nest boxes -...

    Easter Egger or Ameraucana?

I have both. Ameraucana's lay beautiful eggs and I enjoy their personality, but they definitely aren't the first ones to lay. EE have such a wide variety that some lay cool colors, and some have really cool personalities. But others don't. But I do love how different EE look. So I would say it...

    Small animal. No bodies.

Years ago we used to have problems with raccoons. They actually pulled the wood off the side of our coop. We had nailed it instead of screwing. (learned that lesson) They are crazy with what they can do. Even simple latches and heavy objects are no obstacle. But I am scared that the others...

    Small animal. No bodies.

Sorry, I can't show pictures of my brooder because I already took it back apart. It just has a hinged top. That is a wood frame covered in hardwire. The floor was plywood on a frame. The shed was a small wooden shed. That morning, there was a hole chewed in the floor. (it's up about 1-1/2"...

    Small animal. No bodies.

That was my first idea, because i have never had anything take more than 1. I looked all through the shed. (it's only 8x10) and part of the yard. The only thing I found was some feathers in the shed. The shed is only about 5 feet from my house. I thought they would be safer there than out back...

    1st winter and worried....

I agree. Heated water is the best solution. We usually have a week of 20below and have tried a few different methods. Right now we have an insulated coop with no heat other than water. Our worst luck was actually when we heated the coop. They were fine with the heat, however, the power went out...

    Small animal. No bodies.

It was 1/2" on the brooder, I don't know what size was on the outside of the shed. There's no tunnels because the shed had a floor, they chewed a small hole on the bottom of the shed. If rats will take it all, it must be them. They are small enough and will chew through things. But 12 in 1...

    Small animal. No bodies.

Last night, we had 12- 6 week old chicks taken. They were in a brooder in a shed. Something chewed through the plywood and took them all. There were some feathers and a little skin, but no bodies. The whole chewed in the plywood is not very big, barely big enough for the chicks. So my first...

Bought house with chicken stuff here

It happens to all of us. And it takes a little bit to get used to a new incubator.

    Help! Incubator got too hot?

I would just wait and candle them. I think there is still hope. As long as it doesn't happen again, I would say you are fine.

    Help! Incubator got too hot?

Do you have forced air or still? And how long was it that high?

I know, I am pretty sad about it. She loved to sit and she was huge, so she covered a lot.

Not an entry. Just a sad day. This was the best broody. She died yesterday. I don't know how to replace her.

I love these pictures. When I first saw it, it looked like she was trying to brood another hen. How did they get along?
