    Duckling sitting a lot

I thought my duckling days were over, it’s been 8 years since I hatched my own. I only have my drake, Pippy Duck, left now and two female Welsh Harlequins, Parsley and Posie, I brought as adults to keep him company. But I guess someone had other ideas on the matter and brought Coco into our...

    Duckling sitting a lot

It will be a nice surprise, along with whether Coco is actually a drake. I’m guessing he is as his peep is quieter and he’s not as vocal as Cornflake, but I could be wrong. No sign of a quack yet either. I was hoping for a female as that would mix in easier with my other 3 ducks (1 drake and 2...

    Duckling sitting a lot

Here they are in their mini pool (a cat’s litter tray :) ) Any thoughts on what breed Coco is?

    Duckling sitting a lot

I think you have a point, Coco continues to grow and is very happy. I’m wondering now if he is a Teal Duck and not a Mallard as originally thought, he is very dainty but prefect in proportion. I’m coming to the conclusion he is just happy to sit down and watch the world go by. Maybe when they...

    Duckling sitting a lot

I hadn’t thought of that, but that’s a good point. He did have a tough start and I wasn’t sure he’d survive that first night. He took a while and a lot of coaxing to start eating too. Thank you for pointing that out and the reassurance, it’s been such a long time since I raised ducklings.

    Duckling sitting a lot

Thank you so much for replying, it’s really good to hear that your duckling sits more too. Coco is very calm, maybe this is why he does it. Good luck with your two, they bring so much joy watching them grow up.

    Duckling sitting a lot

Hi Everyone, I’d really appreciate your thoughts, especially those who have Mallards. My son recently rescued a mallard duckling that jump onto the road in front of his lorry. Thankfully he didn’t run him over. He was around a day old, very cold and wet and mummy duck was no whether to be...

At what age can you sex them by their sound/quaking?????

One of my Khaki females started to make a strange sound around 3 weeks old which eventually turned into a quack - she sounded almost asthmatic at one point or coming down with a cold! The others started to quack around 5 weeks. I was told that the first to hatch is always a drake by an old...

How long can I leave the ducks alone?

I'm assuming you are talking about when they are fully grown and not leaving ducklings alone for long periods of time? You don't say where you live but from a personal point of view I would never leave my ducks in a pen at night unless they were locked up safely. Too many preditors out there...

    Finally!

I love the way they are looking around as if to say 'what's that?' A bit of sunshine cheers everyone up

    Cider Vinegar, treats and Ducklings

You said it was a pack of dogs, Laughing dog? Were they wild ones? It's wonderful that your ducks went to your dogs for protection.

    Cider Vinegar, treats and Ducklings

I think your dachshunds have the right idea myself but I can see that you have to be on your guard. The ACV arrived today, I had to send off for it as the pet store didn't stock it. It says 10ml - 20ml in a litre of water on the label, so I was there with a measuring jug filling the water...

    Problem With Our Male?

When my third KC (Scramble) hatched she was half the size of her siblings, well over a day later and she needed a bit of assistance in the end to get out of the egg. I was really concerned for her for a while as she was just so tiny. The first to hatch I think is a drake (Pip), the second...

    Is this a runner duck?

Ducks are like humans, no two the same. They have their own personality and sometimes they like to be quiet, other times they are very talkative. Girls get on just fine, but they may get VERY loud during the breeding season trying to get the attention of a passing drake so if you find you have...

    Is this a runner duck?

I think it is pretty much agreed that females talk the most (how strange is that) but all my Pekins in the past have been very vocal, although the boys were a bit quieter when I think about it. My ducklings are pretty loud too - you can hear them calling me from the other size of the house with...

    Cider Vinegar, treats and Ducklings

Bears! Wow, I forget how lucky we are in Britain just to worry about dogs and foxes. Our gun laws are very different to yours too, my husband actually has a shotgun licence but by the time I'd got the key and got it out of the cabinet, then loaded it, it would be too late to save my ducks...

    Is this a runner duck?

Hard to tell, I think TLWR is probably right - it's a wait and see (but what a lovely surprise). It doesn't help as Runners were used to create the Campbell breed of duck so they are going to be very similar. But from the shape of the head and that pose and line of the body it gives the...

    Is this a runner duck?

This is one of my Khaki Campbell ducklings at 2 weeks old - I've tried to get you a photo of the beak as that is the give away. It is hard to tell with your photo due to the angle of the shot but from a distance it looks different. I'm no expert but it appears to have the defined shape of a...

Completely new and no idea what we are getting into lol

Our ducks have a boat for a pond, it scrubs out nicely and they stand on the 'seat' to preen themselves. My husband made a wooden ramp just to help them get into it, but half the time they just jump in over the side. It's deep enough too for them to do the underwater swimming that some ducks...
