    Coccidia

Thanks for your support everyone. I sent her for a necropsy and she had egg peritonitis caused by overactive ovaries producing way too many follicles and releasing them all over the place. There was no evidence of Coccidia and she was otherwise healthy.

    Coccidia

Sadly she died later today. I believe the baycox killed her through dehydration caused by the diarrhoea. The other hens did not have diarrhoea. I wonder if it was caused by a reaction between the baycox and the amoxyclav. Where can I find out whether these two medicines can be taken together?

    Coccidia

Thanks everyone. Yes I am in Australia. Going to try a different vet. She had normal poo until I gave the baycox, then really bad, excessive diarrhoea. I've stopped the baycox.

    Coccidia

My hen Beryl was diagnosed with possible egg peritonisis - she has fluid in her tummy but was eating normally. She was given antibiotics - Amoxyclav. Then the vet rang to say she had coccidia in her faeces sample, although she has no symptoms of coccidosis. So she gave me Baycox. I didn't give...

Hens getting sick, losing appetites and dying - wormer ineffective - management of worm damage

Hi everyone, I lost two hens to the same symptoms, then two more got sick. They would look listless then gradually deteriorate until they were not eating. I was regularly worming using the usual poultry brands which you add to water. I made a mash with the correct amount of wormer mixed in...

    Vomiting hen on antibiotics

I should add they are fully wormed and the vet could not find any evidence of mites.

    Vomiting hen on antibiotics

Hello, I have a hen, Betty who is sick. She started off just seeming a bit depressed, and then one day she stopped eating and looked very droopy. I lost another hen about a month before, with similar symptoms, so I decided to take Betty to the vet. She started vomiting quite large amounts of...

    Hen vomiting

Hi there, I'm interested to know what happened to your vomiting hen. I had a very sick hen who was vomiting and not eating. I took her to the vet, who couldn't find anything wrong, but said she was very sick and suggested euthanising. She said we could try antibiotics as a last resort, and my...

    sleeping a lot, pale comb

Hi everyone, Thanks for your advice. Sadly Mabel died last night. The others all seem healthy, but I am planning to feed them supplements to boost their immune systems just in case it was a virus. I am going to give them porridge mixed with grated vegetable and garlic every day. I am going to go...

    sleeping a lot, pale comb

Hi everyone, My 1 year old hen is sleeping a lot, and has been for almost a week. I thought she might be broody but she is not doing the fluffed up feathers and the broody sounds. She sits away from the others under shelter looking miserable. Today I noticed that she has liquidy greenish poo...

    New Mum's vibrating tongue!

I just gave some day old chicks to my broody hen. Initially she was scared and ran away to be with the other hens, so I shut her out and shut the babies in. After a while she seemed to want to go back inside and this time she accepted the babies. When she had pushed them under her, she did a...

One droopy wing, trouble balancing and legs seem weak

Would she have other symptoms with Marek's, like loss of appetite? How could I tell if it is Marek's? Would the other pullets be showing symptoms by now if it was?

    Eye condition

Update - pretty sure it was fowl pox as similar spots appeared on the other hens a few days later. None of them had any other symptoms though.

Dopey and listless in the mornings and has stopped laying

Update on this: I think she had fowl pox. Several lesions came up on her comb and eye. A few days later the other hens came up in a similar rash, but none of them had any other symptoms. She is fully recovered now.

    Picky eaters

Update on this: I switched to Premium Top Layer Mash and although it is 5 dollars more expensive, it is well worth it as it lasts over a month, whereas the scratch was only lasting a week! They eat it all, and they don't waste any.

One droopy wing, trouble balancing and legs seem weak

One of my friend's pullets has one droopy wing, trouble balancing and her legs seem weak - she sits down a lot and doesn't straighten them. Her tail is a bit droopy. She has no other symptoms and is eating fine. She has been like this for about 2 weeks I think. None of the other pullets have any...

Introducing young hens to a flock

OK, I did continue to let them all out together for periods of time when I was around to supervise, but kept them separate for feeding. It took a while before the young ones would venture down off the top of their coop. Once the older hens knew the younger ones would run away, and the younger...

    Eye condition

Thanks - there have been a lot of mosquitos out this summer, so could well be pox. She has been off colour for a while and egg production has been down, but according to the link scabs form during recovery, so hopefully this is a good sign! Just have to wait and see if the others get it.

    Eye condition

Hello chicken experts. Does anybody know what this is? It appeared recently by Glady's eye. I posted before about Gladys being listless in the mornings, and stopped laying. However she did randomly lay an egg the other day! Could the eye thing be related? Thanks.
