Thank you for your post! I have only integrated once and I went to a ton of work with a grow out pen and observing for days. Maybe this time of integrating 6 chicks into an existing flock of 10 hens (5 and 3 year olds) will go smoother. They are a gentle lot and the only problem I had three...
I'm also trying to integrate a Bantam size(Silkie)rooster into my established of 11 large hens. The hens are of two cohorts, aged 4 years and 2 years. The little rooo is barely 3 months old. It is going really well. There have been a few little dust ups lasting about 10 seconds, he defends...
My Light Brahma could never be accused of being gentle. She is not mean, but if she's eating out of my hand or anytime food is involved she is really rough and strong.
One time I found a wild bird egg in the chicken nest. Never figured out what kind, how or why. Just a mystery. I have a covered coop and run but sometimes small birds get in.
Tell me the story about when I was a little fluffy chick and you had to feed me with a dropper and keep me with you until I didn't have anymore pasty butt.
One of the Domininiques gets on the perch and the other does not. They are a year old now so I guess that us the way they are going to be. I still put the floor bird on the roost now and then. She seems very put out about it but stays there for the night.
I had a Gold Star hen. She was also the first of the cohort to lay. She often dropped an egg from the roost. Her eggs were gigantic and when she laid it took about 15 minutes or less on the nest versus hour or more of sitting by the other hens. She would pop on the nest, lay and pop off to play...
Just the other day I asked hubby what acorns were used for. I don't think ever saw any in a bag of nuts. I didn't grow up where there were oak trees or acorns so it is a miracle to me. Thanks for your post.
We have oak trees with acorns but we never get any of them because the Blue Jays take them all. They bury them so maybe this ages the tannin out of them too. The Jays come and Check on the acorns this time of year and when they are ready for harvest they can strip three trees in as many days...
I have one barred rock also (out of 14 chickens I have had); and she is definitely my least favorite because she is so loud. It seems like she wants to boss everyone with her loud squwking, including all humans. I think she is very intelligent and she is not super aggressive or bullying...
