I have some hens that have been broody for about 3 months. How long until they will stop on their own? I don’t want any more chicks but I am thinking of letting them hatch out one each just to get them to stop. I am getting worried about their health.
How did it all turn out?
How cute she looks in her little shirt.
I have a hen with wounds I am tending to as well I have been dressing her wounds to keep her from pecking, using expensive first aid supplies. I like your clean t-shirt idea; can you tell me more about what how you used it to...
I am so sorry about your hen. I am not sure what that could have been. The saliva coming from beak sounds like what happened to mine toward the end.
I noticed that in another hen one night when I was tending the flock for scaly mites. She had liquid dripping from her beak and a sour smell...
Thanks for the advice.
I do think we should have waited to let her out with the flock but we did observe quite a bit to see if she was pecked at by the other chickens and to my surprise she was not. Maybe they picked on her when we were not looking... little suckers. Also the rooster on her...
My chicken has very large sores on her wings, under her wings, on her back and crop area. I treated them with betadine & Neosporin daily and baths weekly for about two weeks. She was doing better so I let her back with her friends. I put the betadine and Neosporin on periodically, and she was...
So... What did the vet say?
Just when I thought my hen was getting better, and I admit I slacked for a few days and did not go out and Dr. her wounds enough, the lesions came back. She is back in the 'chicken hospital' with antibiotic ointment and bandages. Poor thing looks like a wounded...
I am not a vet but I would think that the lice caused the wounds that then became infected. Antibiotics may be necessary so good thing the vet is coming buy on Monday.
Permethrin is some toxic stuff that is why I mentioned to only use it in the case of an infestation. It may be hard on...
The main objective is to kill of the parasites and keep them from coming back and keep the chickens warm and the lesions clean. Make sure they are getting plenty of nutrition and water. This will give them a fighting chance to heal. But if they get worse or don't seam to get better then you...
I had a chickens with very bad lice and also huge lesions. Actually she still has some of the lesions but is on her way to recovery. Here is what I did after researching on line and in backyard chickens:
Initially:
Treated her with Sevin 5% Dust to kill lice and mites. (Only to be used in...
Well sadly we had to put her down this morning.
She had taken a turn for the worst. Her head was down eyes closed.
We did a necropsy on our own the best we could. Mostly a learning exploitative venture.
We found:
- No egg
- Some yellowing inside her cavity (not sure if it was just fat...

I was worried about the others also. I am going to catch some and check them out. Maybe I should treat all of them with sevin powder. Do you have to hold off on eating eggs after treating? If so for how long? Can I put some sevin in there beading (if so how long do I have to wait to eat the...
I have been posting a lot of info in the Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries/Cures... please check that out and let me know what you think. At this point I am just trying to figure out what I can feed her by hand. May be more then just the parasites. I treated for the worms and mites as you all...
Anyone know if that exact brand for hand feeding of all baby birds food is okay for a sick chicken? It has parrots and those kind of birds on the package. It looks like it has a lot of healthy nutritious stuff.
This morning:
Poop was dark more normal looking. Not fully as hard as a fully normal poop, but better.
Her mouth was not as mucusy.
Gave her the food mixture until her crop was full.
She has water and cat food available to her in her cage.
What else can I be feeding her? Just has been...
