I made this coop with a roosting "loft" and a roof top "loft":

At this point, the 4 chickens we have seem to spend 95% of their time in the coop and lower run so I would not consider the additional loft space as square footage for the count.
Thanks DarkWolf, There is a 16" roofoverhang right above it so I think rain getting in is an issue. I'll keep an eye on it though. You can see the roof overhangs in the link below. Its one of the more funky looking coops.

Not sure if this has been done before so I wanted to share. I was looking for a way to make a custom a feederbox that I could refill from the outside. I used the sidewall of my coop as the "front" of the feeder box. This saves on material and allows easy access from the outside. Check it out:
I'm building my first coop....
I would like to extend the ramps up to a screened in roof top deck as shown in the photo. Will the chickens be able to use this? Do you see any issues?
I from Raleigh and I'll be there! I thought it was on the 16th from this link I got when I googled it.

Pat, Maybe a graph could help quantify this discussion.... and it would make it easier for novice coop builders to understand. The graph would show the performance relationship between the amount of venting and the amount of insulation. My personal coop acutally has an insulated section...
Very interesting!
Here are my thoughts.
Although I'm a novice to chicken coops, I've had a decade of experience in designing and building high performance homes. Ventilation in the crawl space and attic is outside the homes thermal envelope (the insulated areas), thus it does not support...
How do you have a good insulated and draft free coop that is insulated? It seems like insulation is pointless if you need vientilation. I've read the explanations... but you would be hard pressed to convince a home builder that the tow do not counter each other.
Built the nesting boxes and Roosts today. Posted more photos on the blog.
One quesiton: I have a roosting area with tree branches in the front.. Would you enclose that area with siding or would just cover it in chicken wire??

Thanks.
I'm building a coop for a friend of mine. It will have two enclosed coop areas in a clerestory design. Please check it out and offer suggestions. I am a first time coop builder and want my chickens to be happy!!
