    Killed 17 chickens

I should have said "in my experience" first, I've never had a bird killed by a wild animal that didn't at least eat something. I have heard about a mink taking out every bird in the coop just for the blood, but I would think the signs would be obvious.

    Killed 17 chickens

Has to be a dog, wild animals don't kill for fun, they will eat some part of the bird. If your pen isn't covered, I would say a dog hopped the fence. I know your pain.

New run, or let them free?

In my experience you might have problems letting them run free. Some of our hens decided they wanted to start laying under the porch then they found a way under the house. Our dogs are still finding really old eggs and its not very pleasant when they bust them open. Is your property well fenced...

Toulouse goose missing without a trace??

We have 3.5 acres fenced in with 4 ft. welded wire. Our chickens are fenced in a separate area with a coop and our ducks and geese have free range of the place with a small pond. Our largest goose is gone, yet no other birds or rabbits are missing. She had three geese and two gander companions...

Dixie Rainbows/Pilgrim chickens - first meaties

I just did some googling and it seems like not only a particular breed but how its raised, free range. Very similar to something the French have with the freedom ranger. "French Label Rouge Free Range program" I've never raised cornish x, but I can say my pioneers were very tasty. Easter egger...

Dixie Rainbows/Pilgrim chickens - first meaties

A lot of ours are showing rooster wear. I had to put two hens in a tractor with younger birds to let them heal. I'm hoping to end up with some of the faster growing traits in some duel purpose birds. Most people have told me it isn't worth the effort. If they get too mean I'll decide its not...

Dixie Rainbows/Pilgrim chickens - first meaties

I can chime in on this one as I still have two roos and three hens that are pioneers in my flock. I got them from Mcmurray last spring, butchered some and kept a few in hopes of breeding them, then I learned they are hybrids and aren't supposed to breed true. I'm still new to breeding birds...

Crossing white chinese gander with brown chinese goose will give me what?

Hello, I see this is an old thread. I got here by searching for this particular cross. Our geese are a white chinese male and a brown chinese female. Our third goose is hatching in the incubator from these parents right now and we are all excited! So far they are all mostly dark, the one that...

    Dixie Rainbows Thread

Did the 2nd generation have the same fast growth rate as the first? I'm curious to see what happens after breeding my pioneers.

    Breeding your own meats

What I read about the pioneers not breeding true was on the McMurray website page for pioneers. There were questions and answers posted for the breed.

    Breeding your own meats

I'll take some pics and post them on this thread if its not out of place. I started with 25. I kept two roos and three hens. I lost on hen early on with leg probs and a roo to idk heart attack? He just turned up dead without a scratch. Also lost a few as chicks and then to predators. They differ...

    Breeding your own meats

I wanted the exact bird I think your wanting. A bird that grows faster than a heritage breed and will breed true. I ordered pioneers from McMurray last spring hoping to breed them. Their site now says they won't breed true because they're a hybrid. I'm going to try anyway, they grew fast, are...

Golden Comet & Red Sex Link

Well is it possible I could breed them together or with another breed and end up with a flock that will breed true with the faster growth rate and be sustainable, or will they just eventually not be able to breed? I appreciate your help.

Golden Comet & Red Sex Link

Maybe you can help with some other questions I have. I got some pioneers from mcmurray hatchery last spring and they grew just as I read, fast. Faster than red rangers but not as fast as cx. My hopes were to have a self sustaining meat bird flock. Since then I've read on McMurrays site that they...
