Do you Clean out poop from the run?

bark takes a long time to compost, I don't care for the pellets, or big wood chips, nor does my cat! The few times I've scraped the run, I add the scrapings to my compost pile. The hens will tear through the compost when they have a chance, and they love it...

Comment by 'Nutcup' in article '"Hentirement"'

Update: my 3 hens are 9 years old. I've received about a dozen eggs or so this year so far. The cochin has long spurs, and is the boss, the silver-laced Wyandott complains a lot, and Pecker, the Americana, has layed the eggs.

I have 3 hens that are about 8 1/2 years old. 2 are starting to molt now. I have received a few dozen eggs this summer. Their butts are messy now, but they dirt bath often. They sure have personalities, and we talk every day. We commiserate about the weather, and I complain when they poop on the...

Review by 'Nutcup' in article 'Chicken-Friendly Plants You Can Grow Near Your Chicken Coop'

From my experience: If you have any plants in your garden that will last over the years, like strawberries, they will trash the beds. They are like little rototillers. If you only plant annuals, you can let them in after you are finished harvesting. Also, I don't understand why they shouldn't...

How to make yolks more yellow?

maycwindu I never raised quail, but I agree with what you say. I have one hen that will look at something I think is a treat, she may just walk away, or another hen will rush over and grab it. Then she's interested. The other day I found a 2" long large pine beetle in my wood stack. I captured...

Comment by 'Nutcup' in article 'Pecker Palace'

I like it! My big concern would be cleaning it out. I built one several years ago that was all screened in to protect the hens, but I had to bend over or be on my knees to clean it out. And, they do need to be cleaned. I built the next 2 tall enough for me to stand up in!

How to make yolks more yellow?

I think eggs with darker yokes taste better, maybe it's a stronger flavor? Are they more nutritious? I'm looking for more information.

I think you're correct, with her cape. But no, she lays brown.

    This is my Pecker

Pecker is still with me! She still lays an occational egg, will eat a few bugs, but doesn't go crazy over meat like the others do. She is the most affectionate chicken, and often spends time away from her sisters.

Comment by 'Nutcup' in article 'Bee's key points to successful and safe free ranging.'

I have a 6 year old alpha Cochin hen that's growing spurs. She protects the other 2 hens as they have almost complete freedom in my backyard. She is the noisiest hen I've ever had, sometimes she drives me nuts. I also have plenty of trees, and the vegetable garden is fenced off to keep those...

Why is my chicken behaving like this

I have a 5 year old Cochin hen that screams almost like a peahen. She bellers in the morning and evening like a rooster. She drives me nuts, I can't go out into the yard without her noise. If I'm out with them, she's normal, unless I'm in the vegetable garden, then she's constantly calling to...

What's the one thing you wish you had included in your coop?

My hens don't like pine shavings, they will lay on the floor in the straw to avoid the shavings in the nest boxes.

    Safety of buried eggs?

I was given one by a Chinese friend, they're expensive and considered a luxury. Not as weird to eat as they look, but I have no desire to eat another.

    Safety of buried eggs?

So, what did you eat that made you sick? Eggs? I don't think I've ever gotten sick from eggs, store-bought or otherwise. I often eat eggs from my older hens with cracked shells, so I'm not too careful. I also sometimes eat them raw, but not the ones with cracked shells.) I've read some people...
