How to reintroduce a hen after injury?

Thank you so much Eggcessive, that was so helpful! She has now rejoined her little flock, EXCEPT for the roost! The other 3 hens aren't letting her onto the roost at night. CC was always on the bottom of the pecking order, and would be off by herself on the roost, but I'm wondering if I...

How to reintroduce a hen after injury?

We have been nursing a hen who was mauled by a neighbor's dog, and she's doing really well. We have been putting her in an outside cage during the day so she can be out near the other 3 hens while she's been recovering. However, CC was already lowest in the pecking order and I'm concerned...

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Thanks so much for the chicken saddle idea, I'm still a novice and this is the first I've heard of them! It's the perfect solution. Also......I know chickens dust themselves regularly to control mites, and I'm getting worried about our girl not having good access to the usual dusting spots...

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Yes! Vetericyn every day! I was trying to supplement with some calendula ointment, as suggested by our favorite chicken lady at the Grange, but our girl just picks/ eats it all off as soon as it's on. I think I'll just stick with the spray and keep hoping for the best. Lots of new feathers...

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Hi Deacons, thanks so much for the check in! My girl is doing pretty well I think, though I've been worried at all her picking at the wounds. It does seem like she's gotten off a lot of the dead skin, and overall it looks a whole lot better, but I worry when it looks like fresh blood from her...

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Thanks so much for the check in. She continues to eat and drink and I keep cleaning the wounds with Vetricin and putting on some calendula ointment that was recommended. However, I feel like I need to have a chicken version of the dog 'collar of shame', they have to wear to not lick wounds...

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Hi, so it's now actually 5 days later, here's what she looks like today.....thanks to all for suggestions/ advice/ support. I am following the advice and she seems stable. But some skin on her back is peeling back and is feeling hard and is turning black. I'm guessing that will need to be cut...

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Thank you so much deacons, I truly appreciate your reply! I have both Betadine and Vetricin so will use those now. I just put her in a secured enclosure outside so she could hear her other 3 sister hens (who generally ostracize her, so I don't want the others to forget that she's still a part...

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Thank you Pineapple416. Would you rinse her with plain water, or continue using hydrogen peroxide? Also, is 'neosporin' type of antibiotic ointment ok to use? Thank you for your help!

Mauled by dog, 4 days later

Help! I've been put in charge of caring for a sweet chicken who was mauled by the neighbor's dog 4 days ago. It's a long story, and I'm too distraught to write more, but I'm looking for any and all suggestions, while keeping in mind we can't afford hundreds of dollars at the vet. She's been...
