We've had chickens for years on our farm. They get high quality feed and nutritious treats every morning. They free range in afternoon when one of us is here. But, having only two hens is something we have never had to deal with before.
Yes, he is a big boy. She is a Buff Orp who is beautiful with all her fluffy feathers but not now. They have a big run so I will keep her in it. She already hangs back from the other two at roost time. Is there anything special to feed her or a supplement? Thanks.
Have only two hens/one rooster. Rooster seems to go after my Buff Orp and she is not feeling great. I see her skin and after he mounts and stands on her!! she stays down and acts like she is trying to recover from that. I hate it.
Should I isolate from the other two for awhile so she can grow...
We are in for a few days' worth of frigid temps and possibility of snow/ice. I have two hens/rooster in a coop. They have an electric water bowl that keeps the water air temp (as long as power stays on). But as for food, if I left food overnight, the mice would eat it. Unless there is something...
Live in central NC near Chapel Hill, NC. Down to two hens and a rooster. Really need 3-4 hens, anywhere from 1-2 years (approximate). The hens need more hens and so does the rooster. Have looked and looked and looked. Breeds can vary but probably not small girls. Thanks.
Hello -- down to two hens and a rooster. Hens need a break and we need 3-4 young layers (six months +). We really like Delawares and don't see them much anymore. Not that we can be picky right now. We live in Southern Orange County, near Chapel Hill - Hillsborough, NC area.
No -- no sign of her. This is interesting -- she has never strayed from her ''sisters and bro'' -- I can't imagine her doing such a thing, but I like hearing this. Thank you.
''Often after a predator attack, the surviving birds will show signs of trauma from witnessing it.'' We've had poultry for almost thirty years so not knew to this trauma. But in the past, the birds do show signs of fear and I describe it as a ''pale of danger'' they sense -- for a few days. They...
Did a wide search for her, knowing their haunts and favorite places to scratch. The rooster typically gives warning sounds whenever there is something irregular so that's one reason I'm perplexed. But, he does stand around and look awesome most of the time, but very near his girls.
My rooster and three hens have been together since babyhood. When they free range, which is typically just around the farm house area, they are a very tight knit group. Each hen was never more than a foot or two away from the other. Yesterday, our lovely Lily disappeared during the day.
We have...
Two of my older hens have passed within the last couple of months so we're down to one rooster (we all thought it was a hen when we got her/him) and three hens.
He needs a few more hens. The ones here need a break, too. We live in the western part of the Triangle and if anyone has two-three...
My red sex hen of 4yr old has BF in both feet. A friend helped me treat them on Monday and she wrapped each foot as well.
I want to soak the hen's feet again and treat them but I cannot single handedly (literally) wrap a new bandage around her feet.
Question -- until I can find someone to help...
We just lost our last Iowa Blue during the night. She was eight years old and what a gal. She was head hen until a rooster unexpectedly arrive and didn't give up her place in the hierarchy until he got too big to boss around. She was exceptionally broody and pretty active until the end. We loved...
