My third hen is laying! This is an egg from my Maran, Bluebelle. I was watching my hens early this morning while sitting outside and drinking my coffee. She started singing her hen song and continued for about 45 minutes. Then she hopped in a nesting box and laid this egg. Not as dark as I...
This egg came from my White Leghorn hen, Snow. She has been laying since August 2nd. It's huge. I'm guessing it must have a double yolk. I don't see how this gigantic egg came out of that little hen.
Here is is in the carton with her others and the ones from my Rhode Island Red...
My White Leghorn, Snow, has been laying little white eggs since August 2nd. On Friday, August 29th. one of my Rhode Island Reds, Ginger, laid her first brown egg:
Here it is in comparison to the White Leghorn's egg:
Both were hatched the last week of March. I have a Barred Plymouth...
Ohhhhh nooooooo! I can't believe this. I have given away more roos than I have hens, and at this point, I only have 10 chickens total!
Thank you both, Chikenobsession and RoostersCrow,HenDeliver! I guess I'll be looking for two more homes or going to a swap meet next weekend.
These are the first two BOs that I've ever owned, and the man I got them from thought they were hens. Maybe he's right, but I'm really not sure. They are about 4 months old. The first three pics are one chicken, and the last three are the second chicken. If they are roos, I have to rehome them...
Today I fInally heard the "hen song" that several people have mentioned. My White Leghorn started laying this past Saturday, and has laid one egg every day since then. Today I went to check on her around noontime when she normally lays her egg. She was singing "Bac, bac, bac, bac, bac, baaaaac...
My best friends’ 13 year-old daughter is staying with me because I'm currently on crutches and wearing a knee stabilizer due to a torn meniscus and also because I need a little help around the house, especially with my dog, cat, and ten chickens. Yesterday, she was feeding the hens while I was...
I read on this site somewhere that you should not treat them both at the same time. It is too rough on the chickens. I just can't remember where I read it.
The only time my chickens pick on one another is when I first bring a new one home. I usually leave the newbie in a dog kennel in the middle of the chicken run and let everyone stare at each other for a few days. Then, I let the newbie out, they are mostly acclimated but there is still a little...
Originally, the coop was one of those kits, but it's been "remodeled" to where the original is almost unrecognizable. But, hopefully now it's element and preditor proof!
Both of the nest boxes have about a fiour inch overhang. Inside I have them blocked off because all the chickens wanted to...
Here are a couple pictures of my coop and run. I bought the coop off Craig's List. Big mistake. Learned my lesson the hard way. Took the leaky roof off, added about 12-18 inches, and made it a slanted roof instead of a pitched one. The short run came with the little coop. Me yard man helped me...
I meant to reply sooner, but my daughter came to visit for several days, and I did not turn on my computer at all!
I think your chickens are about the same size as mine. I got them the last week of March and they are going on 11 weeks old. I'm probably the last person to ask about Nip Nip...
