    Biting behavior

Nope. Not disrupting at all. She is low man. I had a head hen in the past that I put down after the continuous blood bath the coop turned into with her...ahem...management skills. This little gal is far from that. I’m not overly inclined to cull her yet...but thought I’d see what others thought...

    Biting behavior

That’s a great story and a point well made! I’m not overly inclined, yet, to cull her as she is still young and was shaping up to be a good layer. I’m not looking to be besties, just not bitten. I’m sporting some serious bruises on my left hand, as she definitely grabs tissue. I’m going to...

    Biting behavior

I want to be able to handle them for worming and health issues. It is that simple. I have treated bumble foot in a few several years back and being able to handle them easily helped with the treatment. I have a puppy to cuddle! :)

    Biting behavior

So, I've given it over a week, and handle her every morning. I carry her around for awhile, talk to her, pat her on the back, keeping my hand out of the way. She's quick and will bite fast. Sometimes, I am faster and can move out of the way. I have tried pecking her on the head, and holding her...

    Biting behavior

Hi All! I have a 7 month old Speckled Sussex that I raised from a chick. I have always handled her (and her brooder mate) regularly, as I do ALL of my hens. However, lately, life has gotten insane (think Merrimack Valley Gas Explosion insane..and 62 days without gas) and I haven't handled her as...

    Dehydration and Starvation

Update: Just letting you know, unfortunately, Annie didn't make it. She initially did well, then gave up and wouldn't eat or drink unless I was there to encourage her along. I also highly suspect she had some type of brain issue...like a small stroke. It was not Mareck's, that much I know. She...

    Dehydration and Starvation

They are all varying ages. Head hen will be 4 in May, 2 are 3 in July, and 3 are 18 months. They began laying end of January...or about 3 of them. Then after 3 wks just stopped...funny thing, just got my first egg in 3 wks this morning! I know the older they get, the slower the laying. Head...

    Dehydration and Starvation

Thank you so much for your replies! To answer some questions, I do highly suspect the culprit(s) in this one! When I found her, her comb had been damaged and was bleeding. I watched 1 hen in particular, the other day, run her off from a scratch and meal worm treat I was throwing out. The sick...

    Dehydration and Starvation

I would love some input. I have an 18 month old BO, bottom of the pecking order, who, my guess, has been run off the food AND water by the other 5. I didn't catch it til last evening when I went to check on all and close the coop that I found her under the ramp unable to walk. She is extremely...

    Two molts back to back?

As always from this group, excellent feedback! Good to know my once very sweet hen is still in there somewhere! She is one hot molting mess! Also good to know that one of the others is molting in stages. I thought both lost a lot of feathers, and had definite naked spots during it, but I guess...

    Two molts back to back?

I have 2 Barred Rocks that are 2.5 yrs old. Both have gone through their molts. One is further ahead in recovery of it than the other, but all feather dropping from them pretty much ceased, and their new feathers are mostly in. The first one started the beginning of Oct. I also have 2- 18 month...

My Crop Tube Feeding Journey With My Bird (Pics For Visuals- VERY detailed Post)

Update: At 6:30 this morning, I tubed another 30cc of Pedi into her. She was panting a lot, but it is warm and humid. I'm now guessing it was labored breathing? About 5 min. after tubing her, I heard a loud squawk, turned and saw her flapping all over the place. She looked like she was seizing...

Technical ?. Does the 125ml include the fluid in the food prep, or just water/Pedi intake? :)

My Crop Tube Feeding Journey With My Bird (Pics For Visuals- VERY detailed Post)

I tried olive oil. Would work for a bit, then lock up. Tossed em. Luckily, I have a med. supply pharmacy 5 miles down the road so I could pick up some more. Also ordered 30ml ones, since I saw the 60ml break down faster. Had to buy a box....56 of them, but hey! I figure if I have them, I may not...

My Crop Tube Feeding Journey With My Bird (Pics For Visuals- VERY detailed Post)

The current outside temp is 81, and she seems comfy. That wasn't the case the last 5 days or so....high 90's! A bit ago, I tired to get another 20ml of Pedi in her. Stupid syringe. It locked up on me. Wouldn't plunge. Two tries to get maybe 15 cc in. Gah! Another thought. I wonder if my...

This is how she looks. I just brought her in to try to give her more Pedialyte, but her crop is still fairly full. And....she's doing that listing thing..... This is her healthy... Sigh.....

God bless you for being so quick to reply!! You are a huge comfort to those of us getting up to speed. I ordered Baytril yesterday, so it may be a few days before I receive it. I saw your other post on 20mg/kg so I'll be able to figure out her dose. I have Tylan 50 injectable as another med, but...

My Crop Tube Feeding Journey With My Bird (Pics For Visuals- VERY detailed Post)

Thank you, Kathy. No, never forced, but I think I need to smear a little olive oil on it to make it slide easier. The jugular idea makes sense to me. I'll try not to press as hard. On average, when do people see an improvement?? In some ways she's better and in some, worse. She is weaker today...

My Crop Tube Feeding Journey With My Bird (Pics For Visuals- VERY detailed Post)

Resurrecting this one a bit...I just started tube feeding my hen yesterday afternoon. All of the information on this thread has been extremely helpful!! Thanks to the original OP and to Kathy for her never ending wisdom in all things chicken! I have to admit, it is a bit nerve wracking to tube...
