Hello! I’ve got a decent record of calling pulley/cockerel at a fairly young age and I was CERTAIN that this one was a rooster from the moment I got him home, but as they’re growing, he’s not hitting the milestones that I’d expected and now I’m wondering if he’s a hen.
Got four chicks on March...
My Pekin/Swedish ducks lay just as well as the purebred Pekin and Swedish parents. Their eggs aren't quite as large as the pure Pekin, but most are pretty close. One girl did lay a smaller egg-roughly the size of a large chicken egg. They lay on the same schedule as their purebred parents-an egg...
Hello! I have a broody duck that hatched two ducklings overnight. One seems perfectly healthy, but the other hatched with what appeared to be very bruised legs. Both legs were deep purple and appeared to have either blood pooling around the joints or large veins very near the surface of the...
I have several chicks that are a month old today (hatched June 11). I had 15 healthy, happy chicks that I had been takingoutside periodically, always confined within a pen in my dogs' fenced yard. Late last week, I moved their pen into the garden (which the rest of the flock has access to only...
Hello! I'm hatching for the first time in my Incuview incubator and I can't tell you how much I love this thing! I did almost everything wrong and it's still (so far) been a great experience.
I apologize for the wall of text that follows. Bold text throughout to mark the most important stuff...
I'll try to get a pic from above later today or tomorrow (it's pouring rain right now). (S)he doesn't have any related chicks in the same hatch-all the rest are purebred Swedish Flower Hens from a completely different flock. But here's a crappy pic of the mother at roughly the same age or maybe...
Hello! This little guy is 1/2 Speckled Sussex, 1/4 Salmon Faverolle, 1/4 Partridge Rock mix. He's 4 weeks old today and looking a bit manly, but there's one thing holding me back from calling it. His mother looked almost identical at this age-exceptionally slow feathering, heavy body, long thick...
Thanks, everyone! I got the Incuview, as it seemed to have excellent reviews, was a price I was willing to pay, and I just couldn't resist the full visibility. I wish the capacity was a little higher-capacity is only 27 in an incubator that could easily fit 42 at least, but that's okay. I've got...
Hello! I have hatched a few clutches under broody hens, but my first incubator was delivered at my door as I was typing the title for this thread, so I'm new to the incubator game. I have been collecting eggs for a week and a half and have ended up with nearly 4 dozen eggs, although my incubator...
Hello! I have been lurking for some time, but finally have a reason to introduce myself. I'm Sara, and I live in the Wichita area. I've got a small flock of backyard birds and am just beginning to work with purebred birds. I hatched my first Swedish Flower Hen babies a few weeks ago under a...
Editing doesn't seem to allow me to add media, so here it is:
I didn't think to take photos or video of the pullet at her worst, but this video shows a much less severe episode, roughly two weeks after symptoms began. By this point, she could pull herself out of the behavior of something caught...
Hello all! I have 10 Swedish Flower Hen chicks that I purchased from a breeder. Seven are 7-weeks-old today and three are a week younger. They are living inside currently and eating non-medicated chick starter. Bedding in their cage is newspaper under foam shelf liner, and they do not damage or...
Does it have 5 toes? Salmon Faverolle chicks look similar to the one pictured/described, with feathered, white legs, and puffy cheeks, but they also have a 5th toe.
Could you set up a sprinkler with a motion detector to deter the cat? A bit of temporary fencing to keep your hens a little bit back from the perimeter of the yard would keep them from setting it off and the whole thing would probably be inexpensive and easy to set up. I'm betting one or two...
Aren't the 5th toe and feathered legs dominant, or do I have some bad info? I hatched several Faverolles mixes last month and all had the 5th toe and feathered legs. I'm doubting this guy would be a Faverolles without those features. Maybe a 2nd generation EE with those puffy cheeks and yellow legs?
My photos aren't well organized, so I just found this one that gives a bit more detail. The white wing tip is obvious, but before that, you can see the unusual feathers.
I just edited again with a bit more information. The frosting I'm refering to is not the white wing tips, which all of the offspring from this cross do have. It's above the white - the edges of the black feathers are tipped with just a bit of grey/white-roughly in the place where the wing...
Earlier this year, I hatched out two clutches of Swedish/Pekin cross ducklings. Most came out marked almost exactly like a Swedish, but the black ones have some faint mallard-like markings on their faces, like yours. To my uneducated eye, these ducks seem to have a body type like the Swedish...
My Pekins seem to lose feathers like crazy! It could be more noticeable because they're bright white, but when they go through any molting phase at all, it looks like something attacked them. I picked up my male last week for just a minute and he lost half of his wing feathers as he "flew" off...
Your ducks may be burying their eggs or rolling them in the mud so they're camouflaged. I've been known to stand right by an egg for 15 minutes while I'm out playing with the chickens and ducks before I finally notice it's there. If there are any piles of leaves, grass, straw, etc; check in the...
