Ended Official BYC-Mini Contest - Post a pic of your chickens with your other

My little dog "Bella" thinks my chicks are her babies and takes good care of them, including sharing her bed. When they need more room to sprawl out, she politely steps out of her bed to give them more room. They all three chase each other around the yard and keep me and my neighbors fully...

Why do my chickens keep biting the spines on their feathers?

Thank you so much for your quick response. I also checked out the info on that link and it really helped. The timing seems to be perfect for a partial molt. I don't know what to look for as far as parasites since I've never seen one. Would I just check under their wings and close to the skin...

    Proud Mommy Pics and story

I'm so glad someone created a BRAGGING PAGE!!! Here are my two little Darlings. The smaller one (with more black on her back) is Charlotte, (she has an attitude and thinks everything belongs to her) and the larger one is Carly. She is a real sweetheart. She is so gentle and even as one week...

Why do my chickens keep biting the spines on their feathers?

I have two Light Brahmas 3 months old and for the past month they have been preening themselves constantly and keep biting the spines on their feathers, and of course, I now have feathers (and what looks like little pieces of plastic) everywhere. Is this normal? Are they preparing to molt...

How to get them to love you

I had a difficult time with mine at first also, so I started talking to them in my sweetest voice and I took my chair out onto the lawn and literally sat with them for hours. I would occasionally hold out my hand with some oats and let them eat from my hand. This not only told them I had food...

Why is my chick plucking her foot feathers?

I'll try that. She's not real comfortable with me her holding her but I'll do my best. She hasn't found the roost yet but I'll keep trying to get her up there too. Thanks for the help.

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

Tee hee.....they haven't hurt the lawn at all. I'm so happy. They do love to dig for the bugs and I give them some scratch and oatmeal while they are in the portable run. I just move them around the yard as the shade moves and no damage at all to my lawn.

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful questions and replies to my thread. They all helped a great deal. I did build a 4' x 5' portable run out of PVC and chicken wire. It turned out very lightweight and very easy to move around the yard. My chicks are so wonderful that I have...

Why is my chick plucking her foot feathers?

Search as I may, I have not been able to find a thread on this. Could only find birds plucking others feathers. I have 2 beautiful 9 week old Light Brahma chicks and one of them keeps plucking her own foot feathers. The other one is fine. She will stop when I tell her to stop but since they...

Photos of two month old chicks

I don't have Orpingtons but I have 2 month old Light Brahma's that should be the same size. I hope this helps.

How early do you clip chick wings?

Just an FYI for those of you who don't know where or how to cut your chickens wings, I did a search on "how to clip chickens wings" and I was able to find several live demonstrations on Youtube. Hope this helps.

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

Okay, here is the new portable chicken run I made today. Took me nearly all day since I had no one to help me, but I did it. Hopefully I can move them around now and they won't destroy my lawn. They seem so much happier now instead of being in that tiny little dog crate. Although I transport...

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

That being the case, because the coop is so small, I'm wondering if I should line it with the hard foam insulation? Would that regulate the temp better? I certainly don't want them to freeze. It may also keep it at a more steady temp during the summer wouldn't it? Is the hard foam safe for them...

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

Thanks for the info. I don't have a lot of shade so I think I may have to move it at least once or twice a day to keep them in the shade. I'm wondering though about the winter time. Would I want them more in the sun for the warmth during the winter months?

Thinking About Turning the Heat Lamp Off

My chicks are just 5 weeks old and nearly fully feathered. I turned my heat lamp off today after bringing them in from outside since my house is the same temp as the brooder. Now all they want to do is sleep. They don't seem cold or anything but wondering if I should be concerned that they are...

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

My coop is pretty small. 64" long 30" wide and 41" high. There are 2 nesting boxes and 2 roosts on the upper level. The permanent run will be 10' one way and about 8' the other way and about 41" tall and 3' Wide. It will be an L shaped run. I only plan to keep 2 chickens. I have a large city...

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

I really like the idea of wheels and I'll check into that. This portable run will be separate from the 2 story coop and the coop will have a permanent run attached which will be much larger. I have my coop but can't put it together until mid august. I'm just looking at making a smaller portable...

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

Great questions. In addition to the run they will have a small coop with a roost and nesting boxes. I plan to have the run about 2 feet high. There will be water in the run and I plan to cover half the top with a tarp for shade. I'm concerned about the small size but I can't lift much weight...

Will my chickens destroy my grass if they are in a portable run?

I'm new at chicken raising and I'm trying to figure out if my lawn will get ruined (I live in the city) if I keep my free range chicks in a portable run and move it around. How often should I move the run? I'm not as concerned with the poop as I am about having my grass ruined. I also need to...
