Do chickens molt their first year? This will be the first autumn for my girls. I see no signs of it thus far.

    Strange Behaviors - pre-egg laying?

Thanks, all. All six are back together now, no egg. But they all still seem sort of agitated today, usually when I call them, they come running to see what I've brought them, but today they are staying back like they are apprehensive. They do tend to all copy each other, so it could be just...

    Strange Behaviors - pre-egg laying?

I have 6 red sex-linked pullets 18-19 weeks old. They are showing signs of getting ready to lay (bright red combs, broadening bottoms). This morning 5 of them were away from their house on the far side of their yard and acting very agitated. One was by herself in the house. The other five...

At what age do they begin to roost at night?

My six pullets about 8-9 weeks old, dog pile into one nesting box, ignoring the nice roosts they have, which is why I came here to check. But it sounds like they will figure it out eventually. I love them, but I do call them the "Stupids" sometimes.

    "Chest Bumping"

I had questioned week or so ago about getting chicks outside. We did it gradually, I did force them out the first day, because I had to clean their house, but as soon as I opened the door back in, all six scrambled up the ramp back in. But now over a week, they are going in and out on their...

    Going outside the "Box"

This is their sixth day in the coop. As I noted one did come out (or got pushed), but then cried until she got herself back in, which she apparently did with no problem. Tomorrow I'll put some feed outside, too and see what happens, But it sounds like there's no need to push it. Thanks!

    Going outside the "Box"

Thanks, it sounds like moving the food out may be the answer. One did come out today, I don't know if on purpose or maybe she got pushed, but she cried loudly for a bit but must have found her way back up, when I went to check, she was back inside. So I don't think that will be a problem for them.

    Going outside the "Box"

I moved my 6 girls outside to their coop about five days ago. I'm in Southern Mississippi, so temperature is not a issue. I put their food and water inside, figuring it would help the transition. They seem to be thriving, but although each day I open the door for them to go outside (enclosed...
