    Recommended hatcheries?

Cackle Hatchery in Lebanon, Missouri has always sent happy, healthy chicks. But I agree with TwoShepherds, probably best to go with the hatchery nearest home. The faster you receive them, the better off they’ll be.

Official BYC Poll: Is your RUN Covered or Not?

My run is covered by a trampoline. In fact, the run is made from a 15’ round trampoline that is raised on poles, to be about 8’ tall. It is attached to the main coop, with a mini coop inside when I’m raising chicks. The chickens free range once old enough. So, as now, when raising chicks, I...

    9 week Barred Rock—still pullet? 🙏🏻

I’d say pullet. Need to see tail feathers.

Silver Laced Wyandotte Pullet or Cockerel?

I think this is a pullet. A better tail feather pic would help. But my guess is pullet.

105 degrees and 8 week old chicks still prefer staying in the coop?

Also, do they have comfy places to perch out in their run?

105 degrees and 8 week old chicks still prefer staying in the coop?

I would check for anything that could be frightening or unsettling...possible predators, loud noises, etc. Absent any reason they’d want to hide, I might consider closing the coop for at least a portion of the day, forcing them to stay outside. Maybe it’s just a habit, and hasn’t occurred to...

    A special hen’s passing...

Yes, agree absolutely! Fanny had a very wonderful six years, living a life of community, plentiful food, and the free roam of about 12 acres, under the watchful protection of the careful eye of 3 roosters and 3 protector dogs. She had a heater when it was cold. And a fan when it was hot. Loads...

    A special hen’s passing...

Sadly, but not unexpected, Fanny has died. The last of my 3 original Golden Girls. She was old, and had enjoyed lots of sunshiney days. She no longer laid eggs, but was nonetheless a very special hen, and forever member of the Blessed and Highly Favored Flock of Whisper Hill. That’s her...

    New momma... don't understand

Ohhh, right, absolutely! I didn’t get the part of how the chicks had been separated from the rest of the flock all this time. I wholeheartedly agree.

    New momma... don't understand

Ten weeks old is old enough to begin to make their own way in the pecking order. Are they still using their baby chick voice, cheeping, or have they begun to vocalize like adults? Once they are sounding like adults, in my experience, they will all get along better. My suggestion is to keep an...

    I don’t think she’s a Buttercup?

She came with a set of Sicilian Buttercups. But she doesn’t look like the rest. Can anyone identify her breed?

Opinions wanted!! Broody hen integrated or separated?

I’ve allowed several broodys to hatch their eggs and raise their young while fully integrated, over the past few years. Our Oklahoma heat is the thing I have to watch out for. My broody hens will sit on that nest until they die. I was told they would get themselves up for water. I’ve tried...
