Oh, my mistake, LisaLouHoo. I see now that OldChurchEggery posted the pic (the first pic in her post with the red & white bird).

LisaLouHoo, how old is your splash pullet? I have one that looks exactly like yours. It was hatched in early February, and I've been trying to figure out it he/she is a pullet or cockerel.

Lots of variables in that question. 1.How big is your flock? How many hens? 2. Do you free range? 3. Were the two roosters raised together?

Day 2 update: Here's a pic of the chicks (some of them) on their first venture out of the hutch with momma today. Nine chicks. Only two of the eggs were duds, which I have now removed from the nest. Question: Will momma lead the chicks to the chick waterers and feeders?

Hatch Day! First peek at the SFH chicks hatched this morning under my broody cuckoo maran. I've seen three so far: a dark one, a yellow one, and a yellow & brown one.

Help! Eggs due to hatch in 3 days, and I found a dead chick today.

Hi, y'all. I need some quick advice. My broody cuckoo maran has been sitting on a dozen fertilized SFH eggs for two and a half weeks. This coming Sunday will be three weeks, and I know that means they should hatch on Saturday or Sunday. The hen and eggs are safely isolated from the rest of the...

Anna's development has been so different from Olaf's. Olaf is now much larger than Anna, and he has distinctive hackles and saddle feathers, and much larger, longer wattles. In contrast, the feathers on Anna's neck and saddle look like all the other feathers on "her" body (not pointy; exact same...

Leah's Mom, Thank you for asking. My broody cuckoo maran is still sitting on the fertilized SFH eggs ... a week and a half now. Halfway there! My austalorp is also broody, but I haven't tried to break her yet because she's my back-up in case my maran abandons the clutch early. Update on the...

Woo woo, my maran stayed on the eggs all day. It appears she has made the transition from coop to hutch. Whew!

I may have shined my flashlight on her and the eggs too much when I moved her. I was afraid that, in utter darkness in a strange place, she wouldn't know the eggs were there. No idea if she has stayed in today. I'll find out when I get home tonight. Fingers crossed!

Except for my flashlight, it was totally dark when I moved her. I had to have the flashlight to see my way around.

I opened the hutch this morning, and she was sitting on the eggs. Hopefully, she'll stay put. We'll see what things look like after work. Thanks for advice and encouragement, all.

I went and checked on the maran in the hutch. She was not sitting on the eggs. She had nestled down in the hay in another part of the hutch. So I took the eggs and stuck them under her. She screeched at me. Thoughts? I'm distressed. This maran has been broody for two weeks, and I'm afraid I've...

Okay, I just moved the maran and SFH eggs to the hutch, after putting in a nice layer of fresh hay. She was alarmed and not anywhere near the eggs when I closed the hutch for the night. I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I fear I've broken her broody and lost the eggs. We will see.

Hi. I need some newbie advice: Yesterday, I put 12 fertilized Swedish Flower Hen eggs that I bought from a nice lady in SE Texas under my broody cuckoo maran. They are all marked with a dot on the end. She is in a nesting box in my coop @ 3 feet off the ground. There are five other nesting...
