Rita is a 4 year-old Easter egger who has been part of my flock for about 2 years now. For the last year, she's been consistently hoarse and somewhat sneezy, but otherwise in fine shape. About 2 weeks ago, she started to get worse, so we brought her inside to keep her warm and dry. When we first...
Oh my gosh! I think you are right about that... Taco DOES enjoy my purple sparkly toenails. Silly little lady! :) My adult hens will also test out a painted fingernail, but they don't go after it with quite the same gusto.
We have a bully, too (Choco Taco), and I'm afraid they are mighty common. I spend tons of times with my chicks (like you, I have sets of different ages), and she gets jealous when I spend time with someone else so she attacks them. But, she's been a bit aggressive since I brought her home --...
We started out with a theme, and then I went rogue.

This is Penny Lane, and she lays the most perfect little eggs. Here she is in late fall fluffing up to keep warm. I keep this picture in my office at work, and visitors always find it quite amusing. She can be something of a ham :) I have no idea what breed she is. She came with our home...
"Whining" is a good word for it!
Nancy seems to be doing just fine. She is still whining, but also making her more "normal" sounds as well. I think she's just a little cranky now that it's summer. I would be too if I spent all day outside.
This is Nancy, and this is the only strange behavior she is exhibiting today. It's hot (over 90 degrees), but she has plenty of access to fresh water and shade. Her poops are normal, she's eating like normal. She was attacked by her sister, Lil, which was also very unusual. I don't know if that...
Thanks for all your help, horseandboots!
Just to update... when I got home yesterday, Nancy was no longer jerking her neck around. In fact, she was up and grazing with the other hens. I wouldn't say she seems 100% because she's still moving a bit slow, but a definite improvement. She even laid...
Once I removed her from the coop, she made, what I considered, a very normal looking poop. A little bit green, average sized. Not runny or foamy at all. Just a regular old poop.
Unfortunately, I do not have any pics at the moment.
She hobbled around a bit, but seemed really dazed. When I tried to pick her up again, she attempted to run away (which is normal behavior), but slower than usual. And then she plopped herself down and started pecking at the ground around...
Hi All,
When I opened my coop this morning, I noticed one of my adult hens (a little over 2 years) was exhibiting some strange behaviors.
Nancy is a "production red", which I'm told is a cross between a New Hampshire and Rhode Island Red. She has been acting fairly normal until this morning...
I stumbled into this thread and figured I'd add that I'm from NC too (North Chatham/Chapel Hill), so apparently in very good company 'round these parts!
We negotiated a chicken coop in the offer on our house and inherited 3 RIRs, 1 EE, and 1 bantam of unknown breed. And then we picked up some...
